Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Director and receiving daily direction from the Technical Director, the Arts Stage Technician is responsible for providing artistic production support, arts lighting tech and design, as well as audio/sound services to all programming at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts (The Isabel). The primary duties of the Arts Stage Technician are to load-in, setup, run, stage manage, and load out the production elements for live events in the Performance Hall of The Isabel. The Arts Stage Technician will also provide arts production services to the Rehearsal Hall, Studio Theatre, Film Screening Room, the Art & Media Lab and other performance spaces, as well as performing related administrative production activities. The Arts Stage Technician also provides event-specific supervisory support to casual production staff as required. The Arts Stage Technician is responsible for providing a welcoming environment to a diverse group of clients and performers and will work closely to achieve the technical and artistic goals of the programming.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Post-secondary diploma with knowledge of theatrical and music practices.
• Experience working with artists in a professional performing arts environment.
• Experience in both arts lighting design and operation, as well as stage management.
• Experience working in an arts venue.
• Documented certification of theatrical lighting and sound specialization is considered an asset (i.e. ETCP).
• Experience in a live performance environment, including the installation and operation of theatrical lighting, sound and video systems.
• Understanding of health and safety practices including safe rigging.
• Valid fall-protection is considered an asset.
• Valid Province of Ontario Class G driver’s license is considered an asset.
• Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Information

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• As assigned by the Technical Director on an event-by-event basis, executes the roles of a show position (stage management; the operation of lighting, sound, video projection or other stage equipment), and participates in the load-in, setup, and load-out of programming.
• Supervises casual production personnel on an event specific basis for set-ups, rehearsals, performances, concerts and load-outs as required.
• Assists touring productions, artists and rental clients in the effective application of technical equipment and systems. This can include fulfilling the requirements of technical riders, stage plots, or designing functional production systems as needed.
• Completes and submits a show report following each performance.
• Serves as the onsite contact and venue liaison for artists, tour management and rental clients as required.
• Provides orientation for rental clients or visiting productions on safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations.
• Maintains the working condition of venue equipment, including records of maintenance.
• Understands the Safety Guidelines for the Live Performance Industry of Ontario, Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA), Ontario Building Code and Fire Code.
• Performs other basic administrative tasks such as photocopying, filing, and receiving deliveries.
• Liaises with artists to facilitate the beginning of each act of a performance (in conjunction with the Front-of-House Coordinator).
• Liaises with agents and the Box Office, as required.
• Attends production and staff meetings, as required.
• Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the loading dock, tool shop, and equipment storage rooms.
• Supervises the appropriate use of the back of house rooms (dressing rooms, green room) by artists, tour management and rental clients.
• Tasked with delivering or obtaining supplies from local vendors, as required.
• Provides tours of the facility to clients and visitors, as required.
• Undertakes other duties as delegated in support of the unit or department.

Salary: $46,026 - prorated to $27,600 based on working 18 hours a week. This position is a continuing-term position working 8 months/year.
