Job Description / Duties

Western Canada Theatre (WCT) is searching for a dynamic, creative HEAD OF SCENIC CARPENTRY to join and lead within our production team in beautiful Kamloops, BC. Our HEAD OF SCENIC CARPENTRY will be part educator, part artist, and full-time builder. With primary responsibility for our scenic builds, the HEAD OF SCENIC CARPENTRY will foster an effective shop environment. Our busy, mid-sized team works collaboratively, with creativity & flexibility. The HEAD OF SCENIC CARPENTRY supports the organization through cost-effective, efficient builds & mentorship of our production staff. Reporting to the Production Manager and Technical Director, the HEAD OF SCENIC CARPENTRY has broad responsibility in the following areas:

Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the construction, installation maintenance and strike of all scenic elements;
• Maintains the highest standards of production quality and safety;
• Maintains a clean and organized carpentry shop;
• Assists the Technical Director in costing, budgeting and scheduling;
• Assists in the creation of construction plans and drawings;
• Working with designers to realize their designs as accurately as possible;
• Determines safe construction methods and working loads.
• Orders, and as needed, shops for materials.
• Supervises additional labour required for the completion of all scenery.
• Attends production meetings, staff meetings, technical rehearsals, and note sessions as scheduled.
• Organizes a safe scenic shop and maintains its tools, supplies and equipment.
• Recommends equipment repairs, replacement and renewal as needed.
• Assists the Scenic Art, Properties and other departments as required.
• Assists the Technical Director and Production Manager with the planning and organization of all scenic elements leading up to tours and co-productions.
• Acts as a resource to other arts community members.
• On occasion, train and/or lead production interns, casual staff and volunteers.
• Other related duties as required.

• Able to safely work at heights and lift heavy scenery
• Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor at all times, punctual and reliable.
• Previous experience an asset: VectorWorks, Microsoft Office
• Certificates in Basic First Aid (formally Emergency First Aid Level 1), fall arrest, and lift training are an asset but not required at time of hiring.
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License is an asset

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Minimum 3 years of experience as a scenic carpenter or similar
• The ability to lift at least 50lbs.
• Comfort working at heights.
• A team player, willing to learn, ready to “pitch in”, and able to get along well with others by responding to others in a helpful and positive manner, including liaising with clients & artists.
• Manages stress well, and exhibits excellent interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy.
• Willing to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings, weekends, late nights and early mornings as the production schedule requires.

Salary: $45,000-$50,000
