Job Description / Duties

The Position mid-July 2012 – May 2013

The Technical Director (TD) works under the supervision of the Production Manager (PM), Andrea Surich. The TD is an integral member of the production team and is responsible for all technical needs for the Mainstage Theatre and the McManus Studio Theatre.

The TD collaborates with the creative teams, all production departments, the rehearsal hall and administration. The TD supports all production departments. The TD, together with the PM is responsible for Health and Safety concerns on all productions and in all departments.

The TD is responsible for the costing, sourcing and purchasing of materials and the scheduling and supervision of the set builds in collaboration with the PM, Designer(s), Head Carpenter and Head Scenic Artist. They produce all drawings and information necessary for the various production departments. They are involved in researching and solving of special-effects challenges and negotiating cross-departmental projects. The TD supervises the stage crew through set up and technical rehearsals in collaboration with all department heads.

Qualifications / Required Skills

The Candidate

The candidate will be a graduate of a theatre school programme or university equivalent and will have at least 3 years of professional Technical Direction experience. The candidate will have a good knowledge of building practices and materials. They will have an excellent working knowledge of VectorWorks and/or AutoCAD. They will have a good knowledge of current lighting and sound practices. They will have good leadership skills, good communication skills and will be a great collaborator. They will be familiar with union contracts including CAEA and IATSE contracts. The successful candidate will be creative, curious, have great problem solving skills and be passionate about theatre.
