Job Description / Duties

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The Technical Director is part administrative and part hands-on:

  • Oversees the progress of install and striking a show (sets, props, costumes, sound and lights), so that activities are done logically and safely. 
  • Places orders for all supplies and materials needed to build or maintain productions, shop and theatre equipment. 
  • Schedules and supervises crew and intra-crew meetings. 
  • Directly supervises all technical and dress rehearsals. 
  • In conjunction with the PM, establishes crews and posts crew calls. 
  • Establishes schedules and deadlines for completion of set, costume, and props construction. 
  • Supervises construction to repair of sets and props. 
  • Actively supervises the building, painting, and rigging of scenery; the installation and operation of all lighting and sound equipment and all necessary modifications to the stage and/or theatre for the production, with proper attention to the safety of crew members. 
  • Schedules and supervises the load-in and initial install in the theatre. 
  • Prepares for the rehearsals; attends, consults and assists at technical and dress rehearsals. 
  • Trouble shoots and makes notes regarding technical problems. 
  • Makes decisions regarding necessary changes required in consultation with department heads, production manager, designer and director. 
  • Runs the daily ‘notes’ sessions following technical rehearsals. 
  • During final rehearsals is responsible for the training and supervision of all backstage personnel, (In consultation with Stage Manager.) 
  • Is available to advise and assist the backstage personnel if problems arise. 
  • Supervises and takes an active part in the strike of the production. 
  • With the Heads of Department organizes specific strike procedures. 
  • Takes measures to ensure the safety of those involved in the strike of the production, including proper scheduling of activities. 
  • Organizes (with the crew heads) the storage of all production equipment and the return of all borrowed items. 
  • Keeps an up-to-date accounting of supplies used, tools lost or broken, the condition of borrowed units, and costs incurred. 
  • Collects and collates all final crew reports. Assists the Production Manager in keeping a record of hours worked by crews, and any special problems encountered. 
  • May travel with tour personnel; supervise tours.Others duties as assigned. 

Working Conditions:

This Technical Director must be able to work safely around power tools, on ladders and lifts, and around electricity.

Position requires a broad range of physical movement including prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, and turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of the daily activities.

The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in operating equipment, using tools and preparing written material.

The position requires near and far vision in reading, operating equipment, and viewing productions.

Hearing is required to set up, manage and operate sound systems and to communicate with others.

The need to lift, drag, and/or push materials weighing up to 100 kg may also be required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Education & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical theatre arts, dance music, communications or related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience. 
  • Must have a thorough understanding of techniques, methods and procedures of entertainment productions including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting systems; stage carpentry; appropriate safety precautions and procedures. 
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate the need for technical support for various events and performances; plan, develop, schedule and provide the technical supports required for each event or performance. 
  • Ability to produce construction and install drawings and direct crew in the construction and installation of set, lighting, video, audio, props and wardrobe. 
  • Working knowledge of inventory management of necessary supplies. 
  • Administrative functions - provide assistance in budget preparation; establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of various groups, vendors, stakeholders, co-workers, and others. 
  • Maintain irregular and extended working hours. 
  • Able to lift, push or pull objects up to 100 kg using appropriate tools. 
  • Criminal Background Check. 
  • Child Abuse Registry Check. 

Skills and Ability:

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Supervision & leadership – ability to provide direction and feedback in order to achieve results. 
  • Initiative – ability to identify needs and take appropriate action. 
  • Working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre and ballet productions including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation. 
  • Practical knowledge of stage management, computerized lighting systems and stage carpentry. 
  • Analytical skills – the ability to analyze and evaluate the need for technical supports required for various events/shows /productions/performances.
