TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

The Technical Director will have daily responsibility for the technical operations of the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts (IBCPA). Reporting to the Director, the incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the effective operation and technical direction of productions and events for various arts departments, including music, drama, film and fine arts within the Isabel Bader Centre. The Technical Director is expected to display a high level of professionalism, expertise and collaboration as they interact with a variety of stakeholders within the University community and external to the Centre including world class performance artists. This position acts as the Departmental Safety Officer for the Isabel, and is the liaison with Physical Plant Services for building issues and projects.


Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide excellent communication and customer service to all users of the Centre, internal and/or external to the institution.
• Act as key point of contact and orient facility renters or visiting productions to health and safety practices, technical specifications and other areas of facility operations. Facilitate the use of the technical facilities by others engaged by, or renting from, the centre.
• Liaises with resident departments (music, film, drama) to support their technical needs, and when appropriate, other University users and external renters.
• For IBCPA, provide daily supervision to Arts Stage Technicians and casual back of house staff in sound, lighting, projection, and stage management services and oversee the design, set up, maintenance and operation of technical systems for theatre, music, and other productions or projects.
• Operate, maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the centre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, video, and communications equipment, as well as the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
• Implement health and safety policies and procedures for staff and volunteers working at the IBCPA, act as Departmental Safety Officer for the Isabel, and liaise with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety and Joint Health and Safety Committees when appropriate
• Advance Isabel events prior to the event date for all technical and artistic needs.
• Determine the necessary technical support, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, required for events and performances presented prior to actual production dates.
• Plan, develop, schedule and provide technical support required for each event or performance.
• Coordinate artist hospitality while at the Isabel, including meal services and fulfilling rider requirements.
• Lead the recruiting, training, scheduling, and assignment of Arts Stage Technicians and casual production staff.
• Monitor and maintain the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and video and rigging equipment, ensuring repairs and replacements are within budgetary constraints.
• Maintain inventory and order specialized supplies.
• Advance in coming artists and productions for scheduling and technical requirements. Provide labour and technical cost estimates associated with the project in a timely manner.
• Attend technical rehearsals to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting of the show.
• Assist in the control of programming budgets and make recommendations to centre leadership regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
• Meet deadlines for providing back of house staff hours for payroll, and updates central show reports within 48 hours of event.
• Manage budget for area of responsibility, make recommendations on budget to Director.
• Collaborate with Administrative Manager on bookings, quotations, and event staff requirements.
• Undertake additional duties as required in support of the IBCPA.

Qualifications / Required Skills

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• College diploma in Technical Theatre combined with a minimum of five years related experience, preferably in a recognized performance environment.
• Supervisory and staff scheduling experience.
• Extensive knowledge of health and safety practices as they apply to a performing arts environment and applicable training or certification is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of Safety Guidelines for the Live Performance Industry of Ontario, Occupational Health & Safety Act (OH&SA), Ontario Building Code and Fire Code is essential.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment with artists, administrators, fundraisers, supervisors, etc.
• Knowledge and experience in sound and lighting practices.
• Experience in stage management and coordination of large scale events.
• Demonstrable experience managing budgets.
• Previous experience working with students in a multidisciplinary environment considered an asset.
• Valid Province of Ontario Class G driver’s licence considered an asset.
• Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL SKILLS:
• Customer service, solution orientation, and the ability to work well with artists and colleagues within the organization.
• Demonstrated interest in learning, specifically as it relates to the performing arts
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision, combined with a high degree of personal initiative, excellent time management / prioritization skills
• Thorough familiarity with all aspects of production, combined with a strong customer service orientation and a demonstrated professional attitude
• Effective capability to analyze and evaluate the need for technical support for various events and performances. Ability to conceptualize creative plans and workable solutions for dealing with artistic and / or technical concerns
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to various clients, internal or external to the centre
• High level of tact and discretion, maturity and good judgment as well as the ability to deal with sensitive issues in a professional manner
• Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives from various groups including, but not limited to, artists, vendors, colleagues and / or students
• Flexible to work irregular or extended work hours, including evenings and / or weekend
• Computer knowledge as it relates to lighting design, operation and trouble shooting of a computer lighting board. Basic word processing skills including familiarity with the Excel spreadsheet program and knowledge of CAD software.

DECISION MAKING:
• Anticipates and proactively implements appropriate solutions to ensure successful programs
• Makes recommendations on current or new programs, identifying opportunities and improvements as required to ensure the success of the centre
• Optimizes program delivery in a fixed resource environment, makes recommendations on when and where to make technical investments.
• Identifies and determines strategies to optimally leverage existing resources within the centre
• Determines when decisions should be referred to Director. When referring, makes recommendations to resolve those situations
• Identifies, organizes and works to resolve artist related issues (i.e. dressing room, wardrobe, etc.)
• Coordinates and arranges for rentals of musical instruments, lighting and sound equipment when necessary
• In collaboration with the Director and Administrative Manager, manages the venue calendar for events coming into the hall. Assesses the technical needs required, resolves potential conflicts effectively, and involves to Director as necessary.
• Works within the production budget, identifying technical costs associated with programming.
• Makes recommendations to the Director regarding centre operational efficiencies to support and enhance operations.
• Prioritizes work to achieve deadlines and manage multiple projects.
• Makes decisions regarding volunteer and / or student recruitment.
• Determines appropriate budget allocation managing assigned resources effectively to respond to business needs.
