Production Manager
Department: Artistic Operations
Reports to: VP, Artistic Operations & Community Engagement
Supervises: Operations Coordinator, Stage Manager, Stage Supervisor, IATSE Crew
Role Objective
The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra seeks an experienced PRODUCTION MANAGER. Beginning in August 2018, the successful candidate will manage and supervise all aspects of production for the orchestra’s concerts and non-concert events, with a particular focus on the coordination of physical, technical, human and financial resources.
Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the VP of Artistic Operations, and in coordination with all members of the Operations Team, the Production Manager ensures the highest quality production of all concert and non-concert events. Key responsibilities include:
• Create and manage all production contracts, technical riders, technical bookings, schedules & crew calls;
• Create, manage and communicate production documentation and details to all relevant internal and external stakeholders
• Coordinate creation of stage plots with Stage Manager.
• Manage and supervise the Stage Manager, Operations Coordinator and IATSE crew.
• Plan, manage and supervise all aspects of the technical requirements for WSO productions at our home venue, the Centennial Concert Hall, on run-outs provincially, or on national/international tours. Where necessary, tour with the Orchestra, assisting or undertaking set ups, strikes and all technical activities as required.
• Liaise with Operations Coordinator to communicate & coordinate all Guest Artist requirements for their residency with the WSO.
• Plan, manage and supervise all technical & instrument rentals, transportation, and logistics.
• Through the WSO Stage Manager, liaise with, supervise and manage venue stage crews working on WSO productions at all venues. Including the negotiation of contracts with IATSE Local 63, as applicable.
• Budget, plan and execute efficient crew calls for all WSO activities.
• Oversee and ensure compliance with the WSO’s WSH (Workplace Safety & Health) Policy, local venue safety policies, and all provincial regulations. An active participant on the WSO’s WSH Committee.
• Plan and manage all professional recording activities of the WSO, including the engagement of recording engineers.
• Manage the WSO’s venue bookings and dates calendars with all venues, including the Centennial Concert Hall.
• Season planning: assist the VP Artistic Operations by reviewing technical riders, budgeting projects, and flagging any potential problems prior to season announcement.
• Monitor all production budgets vs. actuals as the season progresses and make plans to address overages within the season budgets.
• Create project budgets for emerging opportunities & future contracted services.
• Coordinate the annual Manitoba Hydro Holiday Tour to rural communities in Manitoba.
• Become an expert on OPAS (the WSO’s operations database), train staff in its use, and assist creating new reports.
• Develop and maintain a list of capital resources in the Operations department, including instruments & equipment.
• Provide operational support to other WSO departments to ensure their successful event planning & execution.
• All other duties as assigned by the VP Artistic Operations & Community Engagement.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications – Required
• Experience in production or stage management for professional productions at the highest artistic level.
• Experience organizing production details for local concerts, run-outs and tours.
• Demonstrated success and experience in budgeting, expense tracking and analysis.
• An excellent communicator – skilled at communicating with a variety of stakeholders, both internal and external, and including clients, crew, artists, musicians, administration and VIPs. An expert navigator of artistic temperament.
• A solver of problems – able to triage a situation into manageable tasks.
• A diplomat – able to diffuse tense situations and resolve interpersonal conflicts.
• A team player – works well with others, and understands how to navigate competing priorities.
• A capable manager & supervisor – able to manage a diverse team, provide constructive feedback/reviews, and manage employee expectations, able to lead team meetings.
• Has exceptional organizational & time-management skills.
• Experience navigating multiple union & venue agreements.
• Makes good use of technology at your disposal: computer/smartphone literate, competent in all Microsoft Office applications, databases – harnesses these tools to help organize work.
• Possesses a Class 5 Driver’s License.
• Is able to interpret Workplace Safety & Health policy and ensures a safe workplace for all production activities.
Qualifications – Ideal but not Required
• Demonstrated success in staging Orchestral concerts & events.
• A knowledge and interest in classical/symphonic music.
• Experience using databases (i.e. OPAS or other systems) in the organization of information and documents.

Additional Information

Position Information
• This is a full-time, salaried opportunity beginning August 7, 2018.
• The successful candidate is required to provide the WSO with a completed criminal record check, along with both the vulnerable sector and Child Abuse Registry checks, at the candidate’s expense, prior to the start of employment.
• The position features a generous benefits package including Health benefits after 3-months, retirement benefits after 1-year, along with annual sick-time and vacation allotments per the WSO Administration Staff handbook.
• The position is based on a 35-hour week and requires attendance at setup, teardown and concert events that may occur in the evenings or on weekends.

Salary: Salaried with benefits, commensurate with experience
