Job Description / Duties

The House Technician (HT) will provide technical expertise for a broad range of performing arts: theatre, dance, music, and festivals, productions, presentations, and events for both the Gateway Theatre Society and its Rental clients. The HT position is responsible for ensuring that all technical aspects of Gateway Theatre productions, presentations, events and rentals, which includes lighting, sound, video/projection, rigging and set installation, are executed safely and up to professional industry standards.

The House Technician supervises and provides direction for technical crews (union and non-union personnel) during set up, run and strike of Gateway Theatre productions, presentations, events and rentals and will act as either the lighting or sound operator during the run of these performances. The House Technician will also work with the Production Manager to perform and plan for regular and ongoing maintenance, ensuring that all theatre equipment is in good repair and properly maintained and that upgrades of technical theatre systems occur when required.

The House Technician works under the direct supervision of the Production Manager and will work closely with the Gateway Theatre Rentals Coordinator and contracted Technical Director(s), contracted Stage Managers and Designers in order to fulfill the specific Technical requirements of the Gateway Theatre’s Pacific Festival, Signature Series (6 shows), Academy Presentations and Rental clients. The HT will have input into pre-production planning and production coordinating and will participate directly in execution of Gateway Theatre’s 2015-16 Season.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Applicants are required to have a high degree of knowledge and practical experience with theatre lighting and sound equipment, have some basic carpentry skills and a clear understanding of rigging and counterweight systems. The individual will be expected to be self-motivated, flexible, able to work independently, take initiative and be able to supervise others. The position requires a productive and positive attitude as the House Technician interacts with diverse groups of creative teams, rental clients and performers both professional and amateur. Applicant should enjoy working in a team environment under sometimes stressful (but fun) conditions.

House Technician duties will require:
• The ability to handle unexpected, time sensitive and stressful situations, and work well both independently and in a team atmosphere
• A passion for the performing arts and problem solving
• That all supervisory work shall include checking that all work is complete to Industry Standards and is performed in a manner that ensures the safety of the staff, contractor, performers, patrons and rental client of Gateway Theatre.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse group of renters, producers, directors, artists, staff and IATSE crew.

Required expertise and experience include, but are not limited to:
• Programming and operation of computer and manual lighting boards
• Operation of sound equipment for both recorded and live audio mixing
• Sound recording and video projection (Q-Lab / SFX)
• Computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Vectorworx and/or CAD programs an asset.
• Ongoing upgrading of skills and certification will be required
• The House Technician should be familiar with or will be required to learn current rules of WCB, WorkSafe in addition to the Gateway Theatre’s current IATSE 118 collective bargaining agreement.

Preference will be given to candidates who have the following Certificates:
• LPEC Certificate
• Firearms Safety Level One
• Stage Carpentry and Rigging (Post-secondary or Certifications an asset)
• Level 1 First Aid
• A valid BC Driver’s License; ability to drive a 5 ton truck
• Pyrotechnics and/or Firearms license
• Please be prepared to provide copies of safety, technical, and/or educational certificates and/or degree(s) listed on your Resume.

Required work experience:
The Candidate should have, at least five years of professional experience as a Theatre Technician, and/or post-secondary education in a related field.

The applicant should have considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the operation and administration of a theatre complex; and of the policies, codes and regulations governing theatrical operations as well as hazards and safety precautions related to same.

Hours of Work:
The applicants need to have a flexible schedule ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays. The House Technician will need to be available for the occasional last minute call. Hours will be scheduled as needed with a four hour minimum assured.

Additional Information

The applicant need not currently be a member of IATSE Local #118 but must be willing to become a member and work under the IATSE local 118/Gateway Theatre Society Collective Agreement.

Salary and Benefits:
Wage of $25.32 per hour. The successful candidate is guaranteed a minimum of 720 hours of work over 24 weeks starting January 18th 2016 and ending July 3rd 2016.

Gateway Theatre contributes into an employee's Health benefit and Welfare Trust Fund (RRSP) package. These benefits are administered to the Candidate though IATSE local #118 once they become a member.
