Job Description / Duties

NYU Abu Dhabi seeks to appoint an innovative and accomplished professor of Theater Design for its dynamic Theater program; this is an open-rank search and a renewable arts contract position. We are looking for an artist/teacher who has a strong professional profile, and a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching. Candidates for this position should hold an MFA and/or have extensive professional theatrical design experience, as well as significant experience teaching in internationally recognized theater training programs and/or liberal arts universities.

We are seeking an artist-educator who possesses a facility/expertise in the technical aspects of design, with an emphasis on scenic, lighting, video, and on the potential for these areas to intersect. Candidates should have an interest in shaping new models of aesthetics and design training within a global framework and the ability to work in a range of styles (e.g., from classical to experimental; traditional proscenium to site-specific.) The ideal candidate will be deeply interested in interdisciplinary work and committed to working collaboratively on creating curriculum and mentoring student projects, from technical, theoretical and aesthetic perspectives. Lastly, we are seeking someone who will take a leadership role in the shaping of NYUAD’s new Arts Center (opening in 2014) as it pertains to design and production models.

Additional Information

The NYUAD Theater Program balances practical training with rigorous academic study, and takes a global view of theater and the arts. We aim to produce theater artists and scholars who are engaged citizens of the world; we prize a collaborative approach in all aspects of our work, including curriculum development (through team-teaching and inter-disciplinary courses) and theatre-making. We seek to establish theatre and performance as vibrant and key components in the cultural and intellectual life of the University and the community. Please visit the Theater Program’s website for a description of its innovative curriculum: nyuad.nyu.edu/academics/undergraduate-programs/majors/theater.html

The teaching load is three undergraduate courses per year (semester system), including at least one in the core curriculum. Faculty may also spend time at NYU New York and other sites of the global network, engaging in both research and teaching. The appointment begins on September 1, 2014.

Applications for this position are due by November 1, although review of applications will begin on October 1; applications received later than November 1 will be reviewed until the position is filled. To be considered, applicants should submit a cover letter describing their experience, teaching philosophy, and theater training; a Curriculum Vitae; and three letters of reference, all in PDF format.
