Mr. Bruce W. McMullan passed away on February 8, 2017 as a result of a massive heart attack following an outpatient procedure on January 31. With the help of modern medication, he rallied to say goodbye to his children Dana, Robin and Christopher. He had suffered from Lewy Body dementia followed by Parkinson since 2013 and had moved to Ottawa to be near his youngest son Christopher and family. He was lovingly cared for 24-hours a day by his wife Christine while living in a retirement residence.
He was Technical Director for the Canadian Opera Company from 1981 to 1999 and technical advisor for The Four Seasons Centre For the Performing Arts. He lived a life in the theatre from his youth, taking part in performances put on by his parents who were founders of a local theatre group in Philadelphia, worked summers for Theatre in the Park, graduated of William Penn Charter School 1952, Amherst University 1956 and Yale University Drama School. He taught at the University of New Mexico, was Chair and professor at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and technical director during summers at Santa Fe Opera. He then relocated to Toronto in 1981 to be Technical Director for the COC. In 2002, he was presented with the CITT Ron Epp Memorial Award for Professional Achievement. Along with Ed and David Mirvish, he was also honored with an Honorary Lifetime gold card from IATSE Local 58.
At his request, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. A mass of intention has been celebrated. Contributions in his name to the Canadian Opera Company would be appreciated: or (416) 847-4949.
