JOB SUMMARY
The role of Backstage Technician is to plan, schedule, design, operate and ensure timely provision of lighting, audio, video, costumes, props, sets and staging elements to established show standards as per rental client specifications and City of Markham policies. This position provides the highest level of technical support in the production of larger and more complex performances at the Flato Markham Theatre and as such is responsible for overseeing the building on selected shows and instructing and training part-time backstage technicians and co-operative education students.
Requires working on a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends and selected holidays based on venues booking schedule.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provides hands-on technical stage work, including lighting, audio, video, special effects, staging, loading in/out, and maintaining advanced equipment.
• Works with users of the theatre to load in, operate, and strike shows.
• Coordinates and supervises the building on selected shows, part-time staff, co-op education students, volunteer crews and other professional technicians and ensures compliance with health and safety and security requirements.
• Reviews show paperwork and implements requirements while problem solving technical and building issues that may arise.
• Writes comprehensive show reports regarding the specific area of operation they are responsible for on any specific show and assists the Production Manager with health and safety building inspections.
• Assists the Production Manager in the technical and hospitality advance of selected shows and assists in the development and implementation of selected technical capital projects.

Qualifications / Required Skills

REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
• A Community College Diploma in Technical Theatre or equivalent discipline
• Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a theatre technician or related experience in live theatre, required to perform complex lighting, sound, special effects, and stage design for complex productions including the provision of instruction/guidance to others
• Experience in using lighting consoles, conventional and intelligent stage lighting systems, video/projection systems and advanced professional audio consoles and reinforcement systems would be assets
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office / 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook etc.)
• Good oral and written communication skills and exemplary customer service and interpersonal skills
• Organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail
• Analytical and problem-solving skills
• The position will require a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends and selected holidays based on the venue’s booking schedule
• Must be physically capable of performing bona fide duties of the job, including heavy lifting up to 50 to 100 pounds; climbing ladders, stairs and lifts; and general maneuverability of a live theatre setting all while being safety conscious at all times. Proper training and equipment will be provided to ensure your safety.
