Job Description / Duties

The Theater and Dance Department at Macalester College invites applications for a tenure track faculty member in Performance Design at the Assistant Professor level. Candidates will be active artists with set or lighting design (or both) as a primary area of expertise. Demonstrated additional proficiency in costume, digital projections, object theater/puppetry, or sound design also welcome. The Search Committee seeks applicants committed to developing an inclusive pedagogy that addresses the vibrancy of our diverse student body
and to providing talented undergraduates with a transformative liberal arts education. Candidates should be ready to work effectively with faculty, production staff, and guest artists in Theater and Dance, and to engage in areas across the Macalester community through service, curricular affinities, and collaborative projects. The 5-course teaching assignment includes designs for 1 mainstage production at the College per year, with the expectation of mentorship of student assistants as well as supervision of student designers.
The faculty member will be working in a new Theater Building completed January 2019, with a large state-of-the-art flexible performance space and a complete 2-D/3-D design studio.
Theater and Dance faculty are active artists in their fields, as the Twin Cities have more theater companies per capita than any other urban center in the country besides New York City. Prominent local companies include the Children’s Theatre Company; the Guthrie Theater; James Sewell Ballet; the Jungle Theater; Mixed Blood; Penumbra Theatre; Pillsbury House Theatre; Ragamala Dance Company; and TU Dance, among many others.

Qualifications / Required Skills

MFA or MFA/PhD in hand at the time of the hire, with primary strengths in set or lighting design; expertise in a second or third area highly desirable. Teaching experience at the undergraduate level is preferred. Evidence of professional artistic work, or professional artistic work in combination with relevant scholarship, is necessary for portfolio consideration at hiring, and at review and tenure evaluations.

Successful applicants will be hands-on designers committed to collaboration and problem-solving with a portfolio preferably in both theater and dance; fluent in current technologies of design for performance; and prepared to work in traditional as well as alternative or site specific performance spaces. They will be able to teach courses in design history and/or theories with a focus on critiques of cultural and social representations. Strong candidates will have a record of experience or demonstrated commitment to teaching diverse students. Our new colleague will be ready to participate in the intellectual and artistic life of Macalester College, as well as in the many aspects of faculty governance.
