Technical Manager
The Technical Manager is a leader in supporting the strategic objectives of program design and program delivery services for live performance based activity at Banff Centre. The Technical Manager responsible for the planning, management and supervision of all technical and production elements of programs, performances, presentations, external rentals and other performing arts related activities across Banff Centre.

Specific Accountabilities
Reporting to the Managing Director, Production, below are some key responsibilities:

Lead responsibility for performing arts based productions, ensuring all technical elements on assigned projects are delivered on schedule and on budget;

Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances;

Conducts health and safety risk assessments and develops safe work practices to respond to any identified hazards.

Oversees and approves the set-up, maintenance, and operation of Lighting, Sound Staging, Projections and Rigging systems for Theatre, Dance, Music Programs, Presentations Conferences and Outreach;

Oversees the set-up, maintenance and safe operation of Scenic, Paint, Wardrobe, Props and Hair & Makeup shops;

Advises on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for individual projects, and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs;

Supervises set and stage construction and management;

Planning, tracking, development and maintenance of budget including annual budgeting, forecasting and reports;

Maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies;

Develops capital purchase plan of technical equipment;

Manages staff and faculty in performing arts technical and production areas, shops and venues including external crew as required;

Prepares and oversees schedule for technical and production areas;

Work with all departments, clients, teams, and faculty in facilitating, managing, and organizing production requirements including technical assessments, technical riders, production costings, identifying crew resource requirements, and studio and venue space requirements.
Practicum Program

Plan and manage practicum program ensuring timely recruitment and ensuring supervisors and mentors are meeting training objectives;

Direct the design and development of practicum group events/training sessions, as appropriate;

Recruit for practicum faculty and guest speakers as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

A degree or diploma in a related field or equivalent professional experience;

Minimum of five years professional experience as a Production Manager, Technical Director or related production leadership role;

Minimum of five years professional experience supervising in a unionized stage environment;

Demonstrated leadership in promoting a safe and healthy workplace, and experience in developing risk assessments and safe work practices;

Working knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations, standards, best practices, and implementation of the same;

Knowledge of structural and mechanical construction for the stage, both materials and techniques, including welding, rigging and painting;

Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems;

Thorough knowledge of lighting, sound, video and theatre rigging;

Experience fulfilling technical and touring riders of touring of productions;

Experience with all of types of live performance including theatre, dance, and music;

Experience in mounting outdoor events;

Ability to read and produce technical drawings and schematics;

Knowledge and practical experience using Microsoft Office;

Strong personnel scheduling, and management skills;

Knowledge of purchasing and accounting procedures;

Strong ability to develop show production budgets;

Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines and a positive attitude while working under pressure;

Strong interpersonal skills;

Minimum Class 5 Driver’s License and experience in loading and driving a 5 Ton Box Truck.

Special Requirements
Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.

Employment Terms & Benefits
In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management/PSP employees, this is a permanent, full time position, subject to a 6 month probationary period.

The annual salary for this position is up to $64,000 annually, working 40 hours per week. The successful candidate will enjoy twenty paid vacation days and four personal days annually, extended medical and dental benefits, and participation in an employer-matched pension plan.
