Category: TechnicalWorking under direction of the Program Director and reporting to the Manager, Theatre Operations, the Technical Director works in all areas of theatre production with a specialty in lights and sound. Duties include: supervising Front-of-House operations, loading in shows, hanging lights, running lights and/or audio for live performances, setting up portable audio and lighting systems, working with rental groups, purchasing concession and scenic supplies, picking up and delivering materials, scenic painting and set construction, set and lighting design, and supervising casual staff. The Technical Director is responsible for instructing students in theatre production techniques, supervising their work and maintaining a positive working environment. Safety is fundamental to this position and the Technical Director must demonstrate safe working practices at all times.
Education: College Diploma in Technical Theatre or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: Three (3) years of production and technical theatre experience, in two or more of the following positions: Lighting Designer, Set Designer, Sound Designer, Head of Construction, Stage Manager, Technical Director, Production Manager, including at least one (1) year experience in supervision, training, or instruction of students.
Skills: Drafting and design ability. Stage Scenery Construction ability. Theatre Light and Sound design and implementation. Knowledge and familiarity with theatrical equipment and tools. Computer knowledge: lighting design, operation, and trouble shooting skills on computer lighting board; basic word processing skills; familiarity with a spreadsheet program; strong CAD abilities. Strong working knowledge and ability to train others in the use of digital audio and Qlab audio software.
Other: Must be self-motivated and able to work without supervision. Good communication skills and conflict resolution when dealing with students. Must maintain high standards and a professional attitude at all times. Excellent interpersonal skills. Organizational abilities that demonstrate initiative. Ability to be responsible and decisive. Ability to delegate and supervise. Ability to demonstrate a wide range of basic technical theatre skills. Have a high degree of physical dexterity and hand eye coordination. Able to work to tight deadlines. Must have knowledge of relevant provincial codes and regulations. Must be adaptable and keep abreast of emerging technology. Flexibility, creativity, tact, and diplomacy are required. Must work effectively both as part of a team and independently. Must be capable of working at heights on ladders and personnel lifts. Must be physically able to lift sheets of ¾” plywood (approx. 70 lbs) and stage scenery. Must have a valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.
Salary: $55,169 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $70,552.
