Job Description / Duties

The Department of English and Drama on the Mississauga campus is looking for a Stage Carpenter/Technician. Full time limited contract, Aug to December 2018
This position requires a self-motivated individual to exercise sound judgment, to communicate with other departments, and to supervise university students as required. The position requires an understanding of technical theatre, managing relationships and balancing responsibilities and time in a manner that is best for the company.
Responsible for the construction of stage scenery.
Attend design and weekly production meetings.
Conduct a risk assessment for scenic elements at various phases of construction and installation.
Supervise load ins and load outs.
Instruct and supervise student crews in the carpentry shop and during load-in and load outs.
Provide assistance or consultation for Head of Props on any props/furniture requiring use of carpentry shop.
Participate in technical and dress rehearsals, as deemed necessary by the Production Manager.
Maintain carpentry shop tools, equipment and materials stock; order supplies as necessary.
Maintain a clean, safe and efficient working.
Additional, one or more of the following tasks: Working with stage lighting, sound or projection equipment. Supervising rental groups or student groups. General theatre maintenance. Supervising performances.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Completion of post-secondary theatre production/technical theatre program.
MUST have the ability to read and comprehend technical drawings, construction drawings and schematics.
Minimum 3 years of experience as a carpenter in a theatrical setting.
Ability to generate accurate construction drawings using CAD software.
Knowledge and understanding of theatrical construction methods and best practices.
Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety legislation.
Ability to think critically and problem solve.
Ability to interact successfully with students in a professional manner. Will be supervising and training student crews.
Will be working some evenings and weekends as required.
Have a flexible and adaptable personality that interacts well with students.
Possess a strong work ethic and attention to detail.
Physical work will be required, including but not limited to, heavy lifting and climbing ladders.
A driver’s license and transportation would be an asset.

Salary: Rate: $25/hr, 36.25 hrs/wk
