Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Production Manager / Technical Director, the Senior House Technician or Head Tech is a hands-on position supervising the Venue Tech team for Kay Meek Arts Centre (KMAC) during rental and host productions, performing theatrical upkeep, and performing the technical and production needs for the KMAC. The Senior House Technician or Head Tech will strive to build positive and professional relationships with staff and clients of The Centre. Type of events include shows that are a) Presented and Produced by the KMAC, b) Shows and Events for our Rental Clients and c) Shows and Events with the staff and students of School District 45. On top of the Senior House Technician or Head Tech duties, it is essential that the successful candidate be an experienced technician capable of directing youth to execute school district events.

Responsibilities:
• Acts, with positive professional conduct, as a point of contact with artists, staff, and clients
• Operates, maintains, and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the maintenance of stage facilities
• In conjunction with the Technical Director – maintains and oversees the daily production schedules in all spaces.
• Acts as Technician / Operator for presentations throughout the season. Mixing Front of House & Monitor Audio are major components of the position.
• Responsible to ensure venues are maintained and restored completely upon completion of events.
• Responsible for training, and scheduling of technical staff, in conjunction with the Technical Director. Provides oversight and training to less experienced venue staff where required.
• Conducts orientation and training to facility renters, students and volunteers in safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations.
• Provides training for staff and volunteers to implement the Fire/Safety plan.
• Assists working with SD 45 Students teaching them the basics of stagecraft and supervising them during school events and presentations.
• Performs preventive maintenance and repairs/replacement as required in conjunction with the Technical Director and within budgetary constraints.
• Strives to perform at the highest standard, and uphold the venue crew to the highest standard.

Qualifications / Required Skills

•8-10+ years related production experience as a technician and/or technical director
•Live Sound Engineer experience, mixing various events and genres to a high level, is a desired asset (KMAC is a YAMAHA QL DIGITAL Venue)
•Related Post-Secondary education or commensurate experience.
•Ability to work flexible and irregular hours, including nights and weekends is required
•Knowledge of sound, lighting, rigging, stage management and staging for a wide range of performing arts disciplines including theatre, film exhibition, dance, music (of all genres), community and school presentations
•Experience in the setting and upholding safety standards in all parts of the venue – from stages, backstage, audience and FOH.
•Experience in supervising and scheduling staff
•Experience working in a team-based collaborative environment with a positive attitude to deliver the highest quality presentations. Proven ability to work with diplomacy and tact with a wide range of stakeholders.
•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
•Experience working with a range of clients, from professional artists, community partners and youth. Experience teaching youth considered a strong asset.
•Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment with a small staff.
•Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
•Proficiency in computer use including QLab, ETC Eos, and other event-based computer programs. Microsoft Office and basic proficiency in computer assisted drafting using Vector Works. KMAC uses both Windows and MacOS computer environments.
•Ability to work independently with a strict adherence to deadlines.
•Mature personal judgment, exhibiting a high level of professionalism and diplomacy

Salary: Compensation: • Part-Time hourly, $31-39 per hour based on experience with a minimum weekly guarantee of 20 hours per week. • KMAC fluctuates with busy periods within the season where 40+ Hours per week are guaranteed and expected. • KMAC provides overtime pay, 1.5X for hours worked in excess of 8 hours, and 2X for hours worked in excess of 12 hours.
