Job Summary

This full-time, seasonal opportunity is ideal for someone who has skills as a carpenter, ideally with a background in building scenery for theatre and is resourceful, handy, and an inventive problem-solver. The 2nd Carpenter has responsibility for the construction of physical sets for our productions, making good use of limited resources while supporting our designers’ vision for the world of our productions on stage. Key to this is a strong work ethic centered on excellent organizational skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive, collaborative relationships and communications with all parties (production staff, creative team, facility staff), as well as administrative staff, and the public.

Reporting to the Head Carpenter, and working closely with the Technical Director and Production Manager, the 2nd Carpenter has responsibility in the following areas:

Duties and Responsibilities

 Responsible for the construction, installation, maintenance and teardown of all scenic elements;
 Maintains the highest standards of production quality, safety and artistry;
 Maintains a clean, organized and safe workshop, tools and storage areas;
 Supervises the operation of the Carpentry Shop when the Head Carpenter is unavailable
 Supervises the Load-in to, and striking of, scenic elements into/out of the theatres when the Head Carpenter is unavailable;
 Assists in the creation of construction plans and drawings;
 Works with the Head Carpenter to build scenic elements as accurately as possible with available resources;
 Researches, orders, and as needed, shops for materials;
 Attends production meetings, staff meetings, technical rehearsals, and note sessions as scheduled;
 Recommends equipment repairs, replacement and renewal as needed;
 Assists the Scenic Art, Properties and other departments as required;
 Assists the Head Carpenter, Technical Director and Production Manager with the planning and organization of all scenic elements leading up to tours and co-productions;
 Acts as a resource to other arts community members;
 Other related duties as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• 3-5 years experience as a scenic carpenter in theatre or as a carpenter in other settings;
• Ability to interpret and generate construction drawings;
• Ability to lead a crew of 3+ people in the shop or the theatre·
• Able to work well both independently and collaboratively within a team;
• Excellent organizational, time-management and communication skills;
• Able to follow organizational safety policies, including working on ladders/at heights and the lifting of heavy scenery;
• Formal training in technical theatre, scenic carpentry, general carpentry or related skills, an asset
• Experience with CAD software and Microsoft Office an asset
• A valid Driver’s License
• This position is physically demanding and may involve standing for long periods of time, bending, pushing, pulling and lifting.
• This position may require the operation of power tools and may involve working at heights.
