Job Description
Ballet Jörgen is Canada’s most active touring dance company, performing across Canada and into the United States each season. The Lighting Director will work closely with the Company’s other technical crew and the Artistic Director. The Lighting Director will be responsible for preparing the lighting plots for all Company productions and direct the hang, focus and cueing for all performances and events. The Lighting Director will tour with the Company, so a desire to travel to small communities from coast to coast across all ten Canadian provinces and into the United States is a must, as is a valid drivers license.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Preparing the lighting plots for all Company productions and ensuring timely delivery of the plots and paperwork to all upcoming performance venues;
• Directing the hang, focus and cueing in each venue;
• Cueing each show on the Company laptop and transferring the show to the in-house lighting operator;
• On occasion you will be required to run lights for a performance;
• Spiking all lighting specials in each theatre and knowing where these specials should be focused;
• Creating paperwork for each ballet toured including lighting notes on each venue;
• General lighting maintenance and lighting inventory;
• Sharing driving responsibilities of production vehicles;
• Assisting with all performance/event load ins and load outs and from the Ballet Jörgen warehouse and studio space as necessary.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Requirements
• Completion of an accredited post-secondary program in technical theatre or the equivalent combination (3 years or more) of experience and education;
• Must have theatrical and dance lighting design experience;
• Experience with leading crews in lighting or technical department;
• Experience with ETC Nomad console;
• A valid drivers license is a must. Duties will include driving production vehicles including 16’ box cube;
• Valid passport;
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Working knowledge of current safety standards;
• Must be self-motivated and possess good organizational and time management skills;
• Punctual, organized and able to perform tasks independently;
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal;
• Good relationship building skills;
• Must be able to handle stressful situations and deadline pressure while ensuring accuracy;
• Skilled in major computer applications related to work including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook;
• Some physical work will be required, including but not limited to, heavy lifting and climbing ladders, aerial lifts and working at heights;
• Work will include evenings and weekends;
• French an asset;
• Touring experience would be an asset.

Additional Information

The Lighting Director will report to the Production Manager and Artistic Director.

Contract Length:
35 to 40 Weeks

Up to 46 hours/week

Additional Information:
Ballet Jörgen’s 2022-2023 season will include tours of Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet, The Nutcracker, Cinderella and a mixed repertoire “Small Halls” performance. Touring will take place across Canada and into the United States.
