Job Description / Duties

The Shaw Festival is seeking applications for a permanent, full time Head Stage Carpenter. This position is included in the jurisdiction of IATSE Local 461 as outlined in its collective bargaining agreement with the Shaw Festival. This position reports operationally to Technical Directors and to the Production Director overall.

Responsibilities:
• Ensure a safe working environment for artists and crew
• Ensure the safe and effective operation of scenery, rigging and automation and properties.
• Ensure the efficient operation of the stage-house, trap areas, fly gallery and orchestra pit of the Festival Theatre. Advise and assist Stage supervisors in the Royal George and Studio Theatres to do the same.
• Assist the Technical Directors in determining staffing and training.
• In conjunction with the Head of Scenic Construction and Technical Directors determine the best methods for the construction, operation and changeover of scenery in a repertory system.
• Supervise the loading, delivery and fit up of finished scenery in the Festival Theatre and assist when needed in other venues
• Provide departmental administration including staffing, scheduling, costing, R&D, purchasing and capital planning
• Build positive personnel relationships and resolve conflicts
• Ensure the readiness of all Stage Department personnel, equipment, facilities and schedule maintenance where required.
• Develop improved methods to support Shaw Festival productions

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications include:
• Demonstrated operational knowledge of all theatre systems, practices and protocols - minimum 5 years’ experience with 2 years in a supervisory role. Experience in repertory theatre would be an asset.
• Proficient understanding of stage methods, materials and related systems i.e.: rigging, automation, masking, scene changes, etc. Experience in scenic construction would be considered an asset
• Strong abilities in drafting and interpreting drawings – both computer generated and manual.
• Good written and oral communication skills
• Proven time management and organizational skills with attention to detail
• Proficiency with computer software, typically, Word, Excel, AutoCAD or Vectorworks.
• A post-secondary education in a technical theatre program or equivalent experience
• A member of IATSE in good standing

Salary: Current hourly rate as per the Production CBA: $35.38 + benefits with a 40-hour weekly guarantee
