Job Description / Duties

The Head Scenic Carpenter is a permanent, full time seasonal position (mid-August – early May), and is a designated Department Head. This position is under the jurisdiction of IATSE Local 105. This position reports to the Production Manager. The majority of work is performed at the Grand Theatre Scene Shop located off-site in East London, so access to a vehicle is an asset.

The Head Scenic Carpenter is responsible for:
• The safe and efficient construction of all scenic elements and furniture pieces in consultation with the Production Manager(PM) and Technical Director(TD).
• Maintaining shop equipment and facilities to the extent of their abilities, and coordinating larger repairs in consultation with the PM, TD, and Building Manager.
• Supervising the First and Second Carpenters, in addition to any additional carpenters hired at the carpentry shop.
• Working closely with Scenic Art to coordinate scheduling of work on, and access to scenic elements throughout the build process.
• Coordinating work on scenic elements with other departments, including but not limited to: Props, Wardrobe, Flies, Stage, Lighting, and Sound.
• Ensuring all calls in the shop are provided with adequate labour to carry out the work assigned in a safe and efficient manner, in consultation with the Production Manager and Business Agent.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• You have five or more years of professional work experience in a shop/theatre environment preferably with supervisory and crew management experience.
• You have a deep knowledge of theatrical building practices in wood and metal, are experienced with flown scenery, have strong knowledge of traditional materials and are excited about researching and using new ones.
• You have experience with basic automated stage machinery at a minimum, and are interested in learning more. Your strong math and spatial reasoning skills will help you succeed in this position.
• You are a problem solver, creative thinker, and great team player. You are a fast builder, learner, and welcome a good challenge.
• You have a good sense of humour, passion for theatre, and love for the work make you the ideal person to join our team.
• You have Frist Aid, Working at Heights, and forklift certification, and/or be willing to obtain them.
• You have some computer drafting experience.
