Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Technical Director, the successful applicant will perform skilled work in the construction, modification, and installation of theatre production sets and related materials for teaching purposes within the School of Fine Arts. Duties include performing skilled carpentry tasks in accordance with trade and theatre production construction practices; interpreting designers’ construction drawings of set and prop units for material requirements and construction techniques; preparing material and cost estimates; assisting with material selection, determining safe construction methods and working loads; fabricating approved designs; establishing and maintaining all power and hand tools within the Scene Shop; recommending equipment repairs, replacement and renewal as needed; obtaining and maintaining safety data on all products and implementing safety protocols in consultation with faculty and the Technical Director; supervising and mentoring students in a variety of tasks working within the Scene Shop; developing and delivering scenic carpentry curriculum to students; and performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Thorough experience (5-10 years) at a journeyperson level in carpentry and woodworking, including considerable experience (3-5 years) in the construction of theatre sets; graduation from high school supplemented by the successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program in carpentry OR considerable experience (3-5 years) as the Head Carpenter of an established professional theatre or thorough experience (5-10 years) as a 2nd Carpenter in a theatrical Scenery Shop; graduation from high school supplemented by a diploma or degree in technical theatre from a recognized post secondary institution; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Possession of a provincial journeyperson certificate in carpentry and/or graduation from a recognized post secondary institute with Technical Theatre training (eg. National Theatre School of Canada or University Theatre Department) is required. Knowledge of, or experience with, stage rigging would be considered an asset.

Additional Information

This is a permanent, sessional position running from September to May, annually.

Salary: $48,338 - $67,781 (CUPE 1615)
