Job Description / Duties

Who are we looking for?

The Granville Island Head Carpenter is a permanent part-time role and a key part of our production management team. The GI Head Stage Carpenter will work under the direct supervision of the Venue Technical Director and will supervise all load ins and load outs at GI Stage and be part of the running crew when required. The GI Head Stage carp will be offered fit ups, runs, and strikes at other ACTC venues as the schedule allows and needs dictate. This is a unionized position in I.A.T.S.E. 118.

We are looking for a creative, out-going, and enthusiastic person who has a passion for theatre. The successful applicant will have a broad knowledge in theatrical procedures, scenic construction, problem solving, tools and theatre products. They will have a generous and warm personality making the cast feel comfortable and safe as they manage the deck for each performance. The Granville Island Head Stage Carp will have a capacity for leadership and teamwork as they coordinate the backstage choreography of set pieces, flying scenery, and props for oftentimes large and dazzling theatrical productions. The Granville Island stage has 4 - 5 shows a season.

What is the job?

• Perform the role of Head Stage Carp on Granville Island show running crew as required.
• Supervise load in and load out crews as well as running crew.
• Document and track all show-related configurations.
• Assist the Technical Director, Stage Manager, Designers and Heads of Costumes, & Props with respective needs while in the theatre. They will work with SM Team and all backstage departments in the documentation of show elements.
• Give regular feedback on status of work as well as estimate assigned work.
• Work with the Technical Director and Head Dresser in planning for the distribution of the costumes, and quick-change areas.
• Ensure proper use and maintenance of facilities, tools and equipment.
• Advise and assist with on-going stage & scenery maintenance.
• Advise and assist on theatre rentals when required.
• Assist with occupational safety and health of workers.
• Assist with organization and purchasing of all consumables.
• The ACTC is a non-departmentalized IATSE workspace. The GI Head Stage Carp will be asked to assist and support all areas of production in the venue as time and track allow. Including but not limited to:
o Laying out wardrobe pre-sets
o Assisting actors with basic quick changes
o Assisting Lx, Sound, and video departments as required

Qualifications / Required Skills

What are the required skills and qualifications?

• Broad knowledge in theatrical procedures, scenic construction, problem solving, tools and theatre products
• Proficient knowledge of counter weighted fly systems and the set-up, rigging and strike of scenery
• Experience with operation and maintenance of motorized stage equipment and scenery
• Ability to read and understand designer blueprints
• Basic dressing skills in professional theatre and the ability to handle basic costume repairs
• Practical experience with MS Office Suite
• A knack for troubleshooting and solving technical problems in theatre
• Ability to supervise load in and load out crews
• Ability to supervise running crew during technical rehearsals and run of the show
• Ability to effectively pack & load trucks


What are the Mandatory requirements?

• At least 3 years experience as running crew in a ‘fly house’
• At least 2 years experience in a leadership position
• Able to work at heights / climb ladders
• Able to repeatedly lift, push or maneuver heavy loads, either alone or with assistance from others
• Valid Driver’s License, able to drive a 5 ton truck


Where will preference be given?

• Members of IATSE local 118.
• Leadership experience in a union environment.
• Supervisor Safety.
• WHIMIS.
• LPEC.
• OFA Level 1 certificate.
• Knowledge of theatrical stage lighting including hang, focus, and maintenance is an asset.
• Pyrotechnic and Firearms certificate.
• At least 3 years’ experience as a stage carpenter.

Additional Information

What are the conditions and remuneration?

• Work is based on a permanent part-time work week
• During Scenic Installations and Tech weeks there will be work scheduled in excess of 40 hours per week
• Overtime hours worked can be banked and paid out at the employees discretion
• Work will be evenings and weekends primarily.
• Primarily you will work at the Granville Island Stage
• Hourly rate is set by IATSE Collective Agreement (Sept 21-22: $29.19/hr)
• Option to be included in IATSE RRSP Matching Program
• Vacation days and PTO for illness and emergency as defined by the ACTC/IATSE CBA
• Comprehensive Benefits Package through IATSE Local 118
• Offices are located in Vancouver, BC on Granville Island and at the BMO Theatre Centre in Olympic Village

Salary: $29.19/hr
