Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Managing Director and Festival Production & Technical Director, the Site Technical Director is responsible for facilitating operations at the Amphitheatre for the set-up, operation and take-down of the technical & production elements for the Freewill Shakespeare Festival. This includes overseeing all non-union crew heads, non-union crew members, and any summer students. This position works closely and liaises with the contracted production service providers (Edmonton Opera & Theatre Garage).

General Conditions:
To be considered, applicants must be available for the entire festival; all set-up days, rehearsal times and performance times.
o Blocking rehearsals: May 11 – June 10, 2020.
o Load-in & set-up of the festival begins: June 4, 2020
o Opening Performances: June 18 & 19, 2020.
o Performances run June 18 to July 12. Performances are Tuesday thru Sunday evenings, with additional matinee performances on Saturdays and Sundays.
o Strike and Load out: July 13 and 14, 2020.
*A complete production schedule may be requested prior to applying for the position.
Applicants will need to work approximately 20 hours in advance of the festival load-in, which includes any production meetings as needed.

Responsibilities include:
● Encourage safe work habits and practices.
● Willing to help achieve the best success for the festival.
● Be the go-to-person for anything that may come up
● Be familiar with the Emergency Manual and carry out the role as necessary.
● Purchasing, ordering and tracking of all expenses.
● Pre-load in:
o In consultation with the designers, facilitate the equipment orders for lighting and sound equipment.
o Schedule & hire all crew needed for the festival, in consultation with the Festival Production & Technical Director.
o Consult with the Festival Production & Technical Director on budget and scheduling of tech week / run / load-out activities.
o Errands and shopping as necessary for the set & prop building.
o Assist in setting up stage management in the rehearsal hall.

● Load-in & Set-up & Onstage Rehearsals:
o Organize all deliveries to the venue.
o Lead all crew in the set-up of the festival equipment and spaces.
o Enforce and encourage safe working practices for all crew and designers.
o Co-ordinate with the Festival Production & Technical Director for the set-up and install of the scenery and properties.
o Assist stage management with set-up and organization
o Set and Props - repair and maintenance, including paint touch-ups as needed.
● Festival Run:
o Be a leading member of the running crew for all performances.
o Ability to organize the backstage operations during the production.
o Complete and supervise all set changes as needed.
● Take-down & Load Out:
o Lead the crew in take-down and packing of the scenery & properties.
o Facilitate and coordinate all rental & borrowed equipment returns.
o Restore of the venue.
o Communicate activities with the Festival Production & Technical Director

Qualifications / Required Skills

o Diploma or Degree in a technical theatre program from a post-secondary institution.
o Class 5 driver’s license. It is strongly suggested this person have a vehicle.
o Knowledge and adherence of safe working practices.
o Motivated: able to see a task that requires attention and completes such tasks without hesitation.
o Ability to remain positive, upbeat, professional and with a calm demeanour under stress.
o Physical fitness: ability to climb, work on ladders and vertical lifts, lift up to 30 pounds and stand for long periods of time.
o Knowledge and understanding of lighting systems, audio systems, scenery installation standards, rigging standards, basic painting techniques, and props handling.
o Calm under pressure and ability to problem-solve in stressful situations.
o Ability to communicate with patrons and donors as needed.
o Ability to communicate in written form (email, text, etc).
o Understanding of labour standards, as well as the ability to work with Union Crews (union crews are used to build and install the scenery).

Additional Information

Hours of Work and Remuneration
The Site Technical Director is paid a salary for the duration of the festival with hours determined by the employee in consultation with the Managing Director and Festival Production & Technical Director.
• The Site TD is expected to work approximately 20 hours of pre-production
• The Site TD is expected to work 12 hour days during tech week of the Festival
• The Site TD is expected to work 5-10 hour days as needed for show run
• The Site TD is expected to work 2 days to strike & restore the Festival.
The salary for this position is $1,140 per week, over the approximately 7 week commitment.
This position is considered management and does not qualify for overtime.

Salary: $1,140 per week, for 7 week commitment.
