Job Description / Duties
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director of Operations is a senior management professional responsible for the leadership and management of The Burlington Performing Arts Centre’s (‘BPAC’) facility and technical department. The incumbent will support the Executive Director with management of the general operations of BPAC, including planning, budgeting, monitoring, and analysis of the building and the technical department, encouraging a culture of service excellence and continuous improvement in delivery of all BPAC Presents and rental activity. The operations of BPAC will include technical operations, event management, capital projects, health and safety, and facility maintenance, cleaning, and security.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the leadership of the front-of-house, technical, and facility operations; capital projects; building maintenance and repairs; cleaning; and security of the facility.
• In collaboration with the Executive Director, manage and develop operational and capital budgets and forecasts to support strategic needs and operational requirements.
• Work closely with the BPAC team to help continuously improve operations and cultivate a respectful and positive workplace culture.
• Supervise technical staff, including employee selection, staff development, performance management, coaching, progressive discipline, and termination.
• Develop and maintain written policy and procedure manuals related to all facility, technical, and production matters related to BPAC.
• Ensure adherence to BPAC governance and management policies as applicable.
• Direct the operations for all BPAC Presents and rental activity, including reviewing, approving, budgeting, and advancing all technical services, labour and scheduling, as well as preparing estimates and securing backline.
• Responsible to develop the business by effectively planning and promoting innovative strategies to minimize costs in accordance with the operating and capital budgets and in collaboration with Executive Director.
• Work with Executive Director and Development staff to research grant opportunities and submit grant requests in relation to backstage staffing, facility renovation and capital upgrade projects for BPAC.
• Maintain awareness of local, regional and industry trends.
• Act as primary point-of-contact with City of Burlington’s Facilities and Buildings Asset Management, Municipal Parking Operations, and Bylaw Compliance departments.
• Liaise with local community and local trade organizations to establish and foster positive relationships and potential mutually beneficial partnerships or collaborations.
• Negotiate with external service providers and suppliers as required.
• Manage day-to-day troubleshooting and issue resolution.
• Develop and maintain effective relationships with the rental clients, artists, managers, agents and BPAC staff to ensure the delivery of efficient venue operations.
• Responsible to create and continuously monitor the emergency procedures for the venue including the training of staff and volunteers.
• Manage and schedule custodial, security, HVAC and mechanical maintenance, elevator maintenance, grounds maintenance and snow removal contracts and contract personnel.
• Maintain and control the issuing and release/return of theatre and office keys, security and access codes –to staff, contractors, and temporary users.
• Manage and schedule building environmental and electrical controls.
• Ensure that all events are run in a safe manner and adhere to all necessary local, provincial and federal laws and regulations.
• Act as the management appointed co-chair of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
• Responsible for performance of workplace inspections, conducting safety information sessions, observing employee safety, investigating incidents, correcting safety violations and commending employee health and safety performance etc. including the documentation of these activities.
• Perform other related duties as mutually agreed with Executive Director.
Qualifications / Required Skills
• University degree in technical theatre, events management, or other related discipline and/or equivalent of training and professional experience.
• Five (5) years recent experience in the operation of a professional performing arts centre or a major entertainment venue.
• Theatre and production experience would be an asset.
• A sound knowledge of the performing arts industry and relevant governing legislation.
• Motivated individual with proven initiative and excellent time and project management skills.
• Well-developed coaching, supervisory and leadership skills and the ability to function effectively with minimal supervision.
• Professional, proven customer service skills with demonstrated interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
• The ability to work in a team environment, liaise with key external and internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization and the public.
• Attention to detail with proven research and report writing skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite, CAD and project management software.
• A demonstrated commitment to achieving and enhancing a healthy and safe operation.
• A valid Ontario driver’s license, Class “G”, with a clean driving record.
• Working at Heights, Fall Arrest, First Aid, and WHMIS certifications.
Additional Information
HOURS OF WORK: Full-time, salaried position. The position requires flexible hours and will include occasional evenings and weekends during high performance periods.

Salary: 90,000 - 113,000
