Job Description / Duties

The Technical Director for the Randolph College for the Performing Arts and Randolph Kids (RCPA) provides technical support for a wide range of events including dance, theatre, and ceremonies in the Randolph Centre for the Arts, Randolph Theatre, Annex Theatre, studios and tutorial rooms.

This position requires crew leadership and hands-on work. Duties include, but are not limited to, set construction; event set-up/load-out; rigging, lighting, and sound production; set-up/tear-down of sets; and video recording.

Reporting to the Production Manager , the Technical Director assists with recruitment and oversight of technical crew and overhires; trains and leads paid and volunteer technical staff; provides instruction and technical assistance for student productions; and performs other duties as assigned.

The position is part-time (25 hours per week), with flexible hours, which offers up to 32 weeks of employment per calendar year. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Key Responsibilities

• Management of all technical requirements for all RCPA productions in consultation with the Production Manager, directors and designers.

• Oversee the costing of RCPA productions, in consultation with the Production Manager.

• Co-ordinate the build schedules for RCPA productions, in consultation with the Production Manager

• Co-ordinate and supervise all fit-up, strike and maintenance calls for RCPA productions and events, including non-union staffing in consultation with Production Manager.

• Work closely with designers, directors, Stage Management and production staff to ensure all RCPA Theatre productions are realized and meet the highest artistic standards within the constraints of RCPA’s schedules and budgets.

• Maintain and update theatre drawings and technical specifications and be responsible for forwarding this information to design teams for RCPA productions.

• Co-ordinate all technical and staffing requirements for all shows presented by RCPA

• Assist and enthusiastically participate in all RCPA in Education programs and events, including occasional mentorship and teaching to apprentices and students.

• Act as alternate to Production Manager when necessary.

• Demonstrated commitment to pursuing professional development and learning new, advanced technical theatre skills

• Strong communication skills, including the ability to interface professionally with internal users of the Randolph Theatre, Annex Theatre and Studios

• Ability to use AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite products; ability to learn QLab, and other theatre relevant software.

Qualifications / Required Skills

A Graduate of a recognized theatre program and a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in the technical department with a producing theatre company or equivalent is required.

Necessary Skills: Carpentry, management, sound and lighting systems experience, tool and construction machinery skills

• Comprehensive knowledge in at least these four areas: Lighting, Audio, Carpentry and Theatre Rigging

• Experience in providing excellent technical production support by leading crew from planning through execution of events

• Experience performing hands-on work while managing, scheduling, and leading technical crews per event

• Experience in instructing/training technical crew and others; and enforcing and ensuring compliance with industry standards for safety codes, regulations, and processes/procedures

• Demonstrated experience in creating, reading, and adjusting set drawings; constructing theatre sets and props; setting up and tearing down lighting, audio, projection, theatre rigging; operating computer equipment; recording, editing and playing back video

• Experience in identifying equipment/supply purchases and rentals as needed

• Experience with show costing, budget tracking, material purchasing, and equipment replacement.

• Experience in creating production schedules and managing large crews

• Excellent communication, interpersonal, collaborative and leadership skills and ability to meet deadlines.

• A Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s license (or equivalent) will be required.

• Thorough knowledge of health and safety regulations and experience in adhering to health and safety in the workplace.

• Ability to work evenings and weekends, particularly during tech period and performance runs.

• Work closely with designers, directors, Stage Management and production staff to ensure all RCPA Theatre productions are realized and meet the highest artistic standards within the constraints of RCPA’s schedules and budgets.

• WHIMIS Certification is an asset

• First Aid & CPR Certification is required

• Working at Heights Certification is required
