Job Description / Duties

• Perform technical work related to the preparation, operation and production of drama, theatre, music and dance productions, as follows:
o Set up lighting, audio and rigging equipment, etc., as required by renter/school;
o Record and report on prescribed forms to the Theatre Manager Centre including all deficiencies in the equipment immediately following each booking;
o Maintain an inventory report on district equipment;
o Work in cooperation with building administrators, custodians, etc.;
o Ensure equipment is returned to assigned location;
o Ensure adherence to safety procedures at all times; supervise students in the safe operation of all equipment;
o Assess technical problems encountered and discuss possible solutions on an on-going basis with the Theatre Manager;
o Responsible for theatrical and house lighting, both in design and operational stages, for all types of activities in the Abbotsford Arts Centre;
o Responsible for designing and implementing corresponding sound requirements, including microphone techniques, recording, sound effects, etc. for district activities, as required.
• Adhere to the specified times for starting, finishing, rest and lunch periods.
• Report any unusual circumstances or incidents to the Theatre Manager immediately.
• Administer the procedures and rules of the theatre, referring discipline-related issues to the Theatre Manager.
• Maintain an inventory of all materials, supplies, and equipment and ensure they are secured against damage or theft; maintain information on suppliers and their products for easy access and reference.
• Ensure that equipment and supplies used to perform duties (including work performed by students) are stored and maintained in a neat and orderly manner.
• Submit reports of damages or other requirements for repair as may occur in the assigned area; maintain accurate written records as required.
• Maintain a working knowledge of district operational/personnel policies related to the position.
• Perform all other such duties as may be assigned by the Theatre Manager, with new and unusual matters referred to the supervisor for guidance.
• Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the school district.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Grade 12 diploma, or equivalent, Theatre Production Diploma or Degree, Live Performance Electrical Certificate (LPEC), Fall Arrest training, Lift certification, experience with lighting and sound consoles, the Arts Centre uses GrandMA and Digico SD9, supplemented by related training. A minimum of 2-5 years related experience. A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License. As well, incumbents also require the following:

• Proven ability to use Microsoft Office programs, internet and internet-based programs, with the ability to learn other software programs;
• Proven ability to determine, judge and select appropriate courses of action in accordance with established policies and procedures;
• Understanding and awareness of cultural diversity;
• Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize, self-motivate, and meet deadlines;
• Proven ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to provide service and relationship to the public and School District in a professional, respectful, positive and courteous manner;
• Proven ability to establish and maintain positive, effective work relationships in a team environment at all times;
• Proven ability to use tact and discretion and maintain confidentiality in matters pertaining to the School District;
• Working knowledge of WHMIS and WorkSafe BC occupational health and safety regulations and the demonstrated ability to work in a manner that recognizes personal safety and the safety of others;
• Ability to be flexible, adaptable and resilient to change;
• Ability to explain complex or simple instructions or information clearly to others;
• Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the position;
• Good knowledge of supplies and equipment used;
• Practical knowledge of supplies and equipment inventory procedures;
• Specific technical knowledge as required in the performing arts, such as sound reinforcement, lighting design and operation;
• Willingness and ability to work changing shifts based on the operational requirements of the Arts Centre;
• Sufficient physical capabilities, stamina and coordination to perform the duties to the standard required; ability to erect and work from scaffolding, ladders and platforms.

Additional Information

Under the general direction of the Theatre Manager, the Theatre Technician is responsible for performing technical work involving the operation of lighting, audio and rigging equipment, and other tasks related to drama, theatre and music within the Abbotsford Arts Centre. Working with the Theatre Manager, the incumbent is involved in all aspects of program preparation, operation and production. The Theatre Technician may be assigned day, afternoon or night shift based on the operational requirements of the Arts Centre. Hours of work and days off may vary according to the rentals of the Centre.

The work involves the performance of a variety of tasks under limited supervision and in accordance with clearly established policies and procedures. Judgment and independence are exercised in handling assignments and determining work methods. Work is reviewed upon completion for quality of service provided and adherence to established standards of performance.

Salary: $26.99 + 8% in lieu of statutory and non-statutory benefits
