Job Description / Duties

- Championing the strategic priorities, artistic vision and mandate of the Theatre.
- Programming and producing high quality mainstage productions and ancillary programs.
- Grant writing, reporting, visioning and application of achieved funding.
- Cultivating strong relationships with local businesses, core funders, sponsors and the community at large.
- Contributing to the Theatre as a safe, fair, encouraging and dynamic workplace.
- Fostering the local and national public image of the Theatre as a centre for cultural expression.

Qualifications / Required Skills

- Five or more years experience in artistic producing or in an artistic leadership role.
- Familiarity with the artistic community of the Atlantic Canadian region as well as the Canadian theatre industry.
- Experience in dramaturgy and the development of new work.
- Strong financial management skills and experience in creating and managing budgets.
- Excellent stakeholder relations and community outreach abilities.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Efficient time management skills.
- Post-secondary education in an artistic discipline and/or Arts Management or Business Administration. Education in other specializations or equivalent work experience will be considered. (Asset)
- Experience in Human Resources policies and procedures. (Asset)
- Proven experience in developing new work which promotes diversity, inclusion, accessibility and equity. (Asset)
- Knowledge of the Canadian Equity Actors Association and Associated Designers of Canada. (Asset)

Ship’s Company Theatre, located within Awokun, Mi’kma’ki, is a professional, nationally recognized, not-for-profit seasonal theatre located in Parrsboro, NS. For 38 years, we have been a prime centre for the production and development of Canadian and Atlantic theatre and a cultural hub in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director oversees the execution of the Theatre’s artistic vision; leading grant writing processes and working in close partnership with the General Manager, other staff and the Board to fulfill the mandate of Ship’s Company Theatre. As a senior leader in the company, the Artistic Director endeavours to deliver a balance between artistic integrity and fostering program and revenue development to ensure the artistic excellence, growth and sustainability of the Theatre, while serving rural Nova Scotia as a centre for cultural programs.

This position is based out of the Ship’s Company Theatre’s historic venue on the Bay of Fundy shore and is expected to comprise a mix of onsite and remote work. The successful candidate is expected to live in Parrsboro while employed as the Artistic Director. The job requires interaction with other staff, Board Members, donors, volunteers and the general public.
