Temporary Full Time (CUPE 1329T)
Posting Status: Open to all current Town of Oakville employees and external applicants.

Duration: This is a contract position lasting for an indefinite period of time.

Internal secondment applications are welcome. Please note, however, that members of management will not be considered for secondments into bargaining unit positions. The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts is a unique operation within the Town of Oakville, requiring an experienced person to provide technical support. The position reports to the Supervisor, Technical Services.

NOTE: Hours of work are 70 hours over 10 days per 14 day period including days, afternoons and evenings. Shifts include mandatory weekend and evenings and overtime as required.

Job Responsibilities:
Operation and maintenance of backstage equipment including work as a stage hand in a safe and efficient manner for all events at the Oakville Centre. The backstage area of the theatre is a very sophisticated environment full of potential hazards and the requirement for this position to maintain a safe environment cannot be over emphasized.

This work includes primary duties as follows:

Audio Technician - Set up / Operation of Digico SD12 and other mixing consoles, install microphones, effects and dynamics processing, playback devices, amplifiers, and speaker systems for events at the Oakville Centre and other venues as necessary. Troubleshoot, operate and mix sound for various events including theatre, musical theatre, spoken word, amplified music concerts and dance; Set up, troubleshoot and operate video projection systems. Program DSP based audio systems when required. Program and operate audio playback systems such as QLab for theatrical use.
Lighting Technician – Programming and operation of MA Lighting, lighting control systems, create effective lighting for dance, theatre, musical theatre and all types of concerts. Hang, circuit, colour and focus conventional and moving lights. Program and operate lighting consoles. Operate a follow spotlight. Install and program DMX based control systems. Trouble shooting and maintaining conventional, automated and LED stage fixtures.
Stage Technician - Set up scenery and staging for all types of event. Repair scenic elements, rig flying scenery, operate single purchase fly system and perform scene changes for all types of events.
Theatre equipment and building maintenance.
Limited supervision of events in Oakville Centre Studio theatre & Waterfront Stage - Supervise clients and crew in these venues and oversee all technical aspects of those events.
Act as a stand-in supervisor of technical services or tech coordinator for events in the main auditorium in the absence of other technical staff (vacation coverage etc.).
Indirectly supervise:
- 4 part time stage hands
- volunteer crews supplied by community clients
- students (co-op etc.)

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications:
Two year college diploma or university degree in Technical Theatre coupled with 3 years related experience in a road house environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
A passion for the performing arts is essential in this fast paced environment, with background in technical theatre.
Familiarity with a live performance environment is critical.
Skills required are: Lighting design, light board operation (proficiency programming MA Lighting consoles is preferred), audio engineer, set construction, carpentry, rigging, stage management, training, working with community volunteer crews.
Requires: Natural Resources Canada - Pyrotechnic Card –Theatrical, scissor lift training and first aid / CPR
Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and PowerPoint is required.
Requires advanced problem solving skills, job estimation skills, resourcefulness and possession of the initiative to perform at a high standard with little supervision.
Proven communication, interpersonal and customer skills are critical. The ability to work as part of a team is critical.
