Job Description / Duties

The Opportunity

Resumes are being accepted for the temporary position of Supervisor, Technical Services within the Culture and Recreation Division, River Run Centre. The temporary contract duration is from December 5, 2022 – April 21, 2023. Reporting to the Manager, Theatre and Civic Events, the successful candidate will oversee all aspects of technical services with a focus on quality customer service and continuous improvement processes. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City’s Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Vision for an inclusive, connected and prosperous city.

Your role
• Participate in the hiring process and provide new employee orientation to staff.
• Provide day-to-day, on-the-job supervision, training and continuous performance feedback to Full-time and Part-time unionized employees, administering corrective action when required.
• Oversee all health and safety related matters, including coordinating necessary training, and required equipment inspections.
• Maintain current working knowledge of Collective Agreement and Labour Relation issues.
• Prepare weekly, and daily work schedules for technical employees including labour requests to I.A.T.S.E, as required.
• Submit hours and approve weekly payroll for technical services department.
• Arrange for the completion of estimates and forward same to clients.
• Review event files in advance to ensure clients’ needs are met and liaise with clients and River Run staff as needed to discuss technical specifications; arrange meetings between clients and technical staff as required.
• Prepare written event plans and distribute to assigned technicians.
• Communicate all necessary information to the appropriate departments.
• Provide or arrange for on-site event supervision.
• Ensure accurate billing information is provided to finance clerk in a timely manner following each event.
• Follow up with clients after each event to discuss any concerns regarding technical services or billing.
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications
• Considerable experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through post secondary education in Theatre Production or a related discipline, and experience in the performing arts/entertainment sector or theatre setting.
• Experience supervising staff and leading work teams in a unionized environment.
• Technical knowledge across all production disciplines, including sound, lighting, carpentry, video and rigging.
• Must understand the needs of the performing arts/entertainment sector, corporations, community groups, educational institutions and other potential clients.
• Familiarity with the co-ordination of many different types of events, including corporate, ticketed and private.
• Demonstrated commitment to customer service.
• Thorough knowledge of a supervisor’s responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations.
• Proven time management skills including the ability to multi-task, work to deadlines and work under pressure.
• Must show initiative, attention to detail, diplomacy, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
