Job Description / Duties

Working as an integral member of the production team of Neptune Theatre, the Props Builder is responsible for the efficient construction, modification, and maintenance of properties and set decoration for all Neptune Theatre productions and events. He/she will execute the stage property needs of the production as dictated by the Head of Properties.

This position is hired on a seasonal basis in accordance with requirements of the year’s programming, typically from July - April.

This role is physical in nature, and involves
- Lifting materials and tools
- Climbing ladders
- Working on and around sets that are under construction

This position is hired under the terms of a Collective Agreement between IATSE 680 and Neptune Theatre.

Qualifications / Required Skills

The Props Builder is in an implementer of the designs provided by a productions creative team. The ideal Props Builder has the ability to read the information that is provided by the Head of Props, the Designer, Stage Managers and the Director, the knowledge, experience and creativity to turn these concepts into Props. They should have a strong interest in both the history and the function of stage properties and a love for theatre and a desire to see it function well on all levels.

The common and relevant technical skills possessed by the ideal Props Builder
include:
- Stage Carpentry
- Hand and Machine sewing Skills
- Upholstery
- Casting and Mould Making
- Minor electrical repair
- Special effects construction
- Experience in other production areas of the theatre
- Metal work and welding
- Drawing
- Scenic painting
- Hand and/or computer drafting computer imaging skills (Photoshop, etc.)
- General computer literacy (email, google)
- Interpreting technical drawings

While not job requirements, a valid driver’s licence and firearms licence are assets.
