Must the show go on?

Educational Session

Do you know what it feels like to be the one to make the decision that will end a show early and disappoint thousands of fans? Or what it feels like to tell a producer that you’re about to cost them money because you need to take action to keep people safe? I do! Join me, legal scholar*, Harvard-educated philosopher**, and Event Safety Alliance Canada Board Chair, as I lead an interactive group exploration on how we make some of the toughest decisions folks in our business might need to make: do we go on with the show or not?

We’ll consider the clash of practical and moral concerns as we dive into real-world case studies of events facing emergency situations, see how legislation can guide us in our decision making, and even touch on a 3000-year-old principle that continues to ground our legal systems to this day.

By attending this session, participants will become more comfortable with the natural discomfort that comes with making challenging decisions. They will gain a better understanding of how to think about risk and liability when thinking about emergency situations that they may face at their venue. Participants will also gain perspectives on how to read and interpret legislation, specifically exploring occupiers’ liability acts and occupational health and safety acts and regulations.
