In 2018, Halifax-based Zuppa Theatre put on "This Is Nowhere", a ground-breaking production combining GPS-guided mobile apps and a dozen hidden performance locations across downtown to create a kind of theatrical scavenger hunt. Progress was underway on using the “NowHere” technology platform for other productions when COVID made in-person performances impossible. In this talk, the creative and technical minds at Zuppa will share how they were able to adapt their technology platform and their dramaturgy to create new kinds of performance experiences during lockdown, and how that’s led to even more creative and technical innovations afterwards. Depending on time and audience, there could be a hands-on component, allowing participants to create their own location-based multimedia experiences using the platform. After attending this session, participants will: - Understand the challenges and opportunities of app-powered location-based theatre, including for accessibility and inclusion. - Understand how innovative artists and performers can leverage technology to adapt performance to the challenges of the 21st century. - Learn how to create impactful and insightful location-based art experiences of their own. |
