Industry Inclusion for Trans and Non-Binary Artists

Educational Session

Developed by the founder of Dead Name Theatre, Lee Stone, “Industry Inclusion for Trans and Non-Binary Artists” will inspire the beginning or continuation of conversations on how to make our theatre spaces safer for all its members.

This workshop covers a wide range of topics including:

  • Trans Vocabulary 101 “I’ve heard this word before but I would value a room where I can have a refresher and an open dialogue about the nuanced meaning.” “I don’t want to offend people, which words are offensive?”
  • Human to Human “How can I support someone whose pronouns are constantly changing?” “What does it mean when someone uses multiple kinds of pronouns? Which one should I use?” “If I accidentally misgender someone, what should I do?” “How do I recognize the difference between uncomfortable, awkward, or dangerous situations for trans and non-binary people?”
  • Gender Neutral Washrooms “I have some questions and concerns.” “Who benefits from them?” “Should we have them at our workplace?”
  • Practicing Gender Neutral Language “How do gender neutral pronouns work?” “I’m trying but I keep making mistakes. How do I get better?”

These topics and conversations will culminate in the ultimate question; “How do these things show up in theatre spaces?”. The facilitator(s) will balance a lecture style workshop with group discussions and activities. A few minutes after each section will also be reserved for “Q&T” or “Questions & Thoughts” as the facilitator(s) don’t pretend to have all the answers but would rather engage with each participant’s questions and thoughts in a brainstorming and communal way.

This workshop is the first step towards standing in solidarity with trans and non-binary creatives, particularly as it relates to theatre spaces. It is for attendees who have a desire to engage trans and non-binary theatre artists in an intentional way but do not yet know how or are in the beginning stages of developing this practice. Attendees from all walks of life, with any level of knowledge or experience on this topic are welcome to attend. Trans and non-binary attendees of the workshop are encouraged to participate as little or as much as they feel comfortable.
