It is a rare opportunity for a performing arts venue to have a second debut. The 53-year-old St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts requires more than a makeover in order to accommodate a much broader engagement with community, versatility in performance, and accessibility for all. The winning scheme in an international design competition to transform STLC is called Transparence by the architects. Join TO Live President and CEO Clyde Wagner and lead architect Siamak Hariri on a tour of the building as it is now and view the designs for what it will become.

After attending this presentation, attendees will be able to...

• Appreciate the limitations of the current building to foster audience development and creative connection with the city;
• Learn how reorienting the axis of the main theatre unites its urban context and opens new avenues for performance;
• Learn how providing education and rehearsal space and artist studios will be integrated within the ecosystem of the new venue;
• Understand how encompassing the influence of Indigenous design informs the overall concept;
• Get up to speed on the latest advances in theatre technology proposed for the venues.

Meeting point: The group will meet in the Meridian Hall Lobby at 9:00 a.m. and then move to the St. Lawrence Centre.

Presenter: Siamak Hariri and Clyde Wagner

Siamak Hariri is a Canadian architect and founding partner of Toronto-based Hariri Pontarini Architects, a 150-person firm established in 1994 with partner David Pontarini. Hariri has designed projects for some of Canada's most beloved cultural and educational institutions, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, Stratford Festival, as well as University of Toronto, Carleton and Western University. His work has been recognized both nationally and internationally with over 90 awards, including the prestigious Royal Architecture Institute of Canada's (RAIC) International Prize for the Bahá’í Temple of South America and several Governor General's Medals and Awards in Architecture. He was selected by The Globe and Mail as one of Canada’s Artists who Mattered Most and his TED Talk, How do you build a sacred space? has been viewed over 1.4 million times. With every commission, Hariri harnesses the transformative power of design, embodying an abiding commitment to architecture’s essentials, to advance the possibilities of light, form, site, material, and craft.

Clyde Wagner an internationally accomplished producer, is the President and CEO of TO Live. Clyde's experience includes Senior Producer, Park Avenue Armory, with productions of: Massive Attack v Adam Curtis; the restaging of Bob Wilson's The Life and Death of Marina Abramović; The XX Residency; and Macbeth, starring Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston, both making their New York stage debuts. Clyde was also the first Producer and General Manager for Luminato, the Toronto Festival for Arts, Culture, and Creativity, and worked as the Executive Producer in charge of all production until leaving to join TO Live. Clyde is a partner in the Visual Art production company PVW, which specializes in producing Art for Public Spaces and operates across both the US and Canada. As a founder and Managing Partner for Sweet Caesar Inc., also started in 2006, Clyde managed the development of this cutting-edge start-up software company created to build interactive platforms for mobile devices. Clyde was associate creative director for eLUXURY.com, the largest luxury website on the web, owned and launched by LVMH (Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton). Clyde also worked as project manager and creative associate for Livent Inc. in New York.
