Tarragon Theatre is proposing to establish an Internship in Design for the Theatre for the 2013-14 Season. The purpose of the internship is to assist a promising young designer in bridging the gap between theatre school and professional practice.
This proposed Internship in Design for the Theatre will be from August 4 2013 to June 1 2014. This is a salaried position.
During this period, the Intern will have the opportunity to work as an assistant to the set, costume and lighting designers of both the Tarragon Main Space and Extra Space productions. Through these assignments, the Intern will be involved in meetings with the directors and designers; will assist the designer in the development of the designs through drafting, model making, fabric swatching, shopping, attending costume fittings and shopping; and will attend rehearsals, including tech and dress rehearsals. In addition, the Intern will be given the opportunity to observe and contribute to the development of new work - an important Tarragon activity.
The strength of the Internship Program is the core of established professional designers and directors with whom the Intern will work, thereby providing the Intern with experience in a range of theatrical styles and design methodologies. Each of the designers will have a mentor relationship with the Intern while the overall Internship Program responsibilities will be shared by Eleanor Antoncic, Production Manager of Tarragon Theatre and Phillip Silver, designer, teacher and former dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, York University.
The proposed Internship in Design for the Theatre is subject to funding confirmation.
Qualifications
The successful Applicant will have completed a qualified post-secondary education in design for the theatre or a theatre production program no later than the proposed beginning of internship.
The successful Applicant will have excellent skills in set, lighting and costume design; drafting for theatre (manual and CAD), Set, Prop and Costume Drawing, Experience in Model building, Basics of Costume Construction, Basics of Scenic Painting - along with a demonstrated interest in the design process as it applies to the creation of new works. The successful Applicant must have a commitment to theatre in Ontario.
Application Process for Candidates for Internship
Applicants should submit a letter of interest (max. 2 pages), stating their career goals and why the applicant believes this internship would help achieve those goals. The application should also include a resume, portfolio with samples of set and costume renderings, manual drafting and CAD drafting, along with photos of models and/or production photos. Two letters from references familiar with the applicant’s theatre work should also be included.
