Theatre Health and Safety Workshop Description 

Many smart, capable theatre practitioners feel that they are not completely on top of health and safety issues given competing demands for both time and resources; however, an investment in health and safety can pay off in protecting both people and productions. Learn more by attending the Theatre Health & Safety Workshop led by Janet Sellery.

Focusing on the unique health and safety challenges that arise in the theatre industry, this workshop will guide participants through the process of risk assessment and control. We will develop a shared vocabulary for advocating health and safety in the workplace, empowering everyone to approach health and safety with confidence. This session will cover how to research health and safety issues, apply legislative requirements and implement best practices in a theatre setting.

It promises to be a day of lively conversation and a chance to figure out some tricky health and safety questions and challenges. Whether companies are big or small, participants will leave this session with a fresh perspective and practical steps to help them create or refocus their health and safety program.

JANET SELLERY BIOGRAPHY   

Janet is recognized as one of Canada’s leading experts in health and safety and the arts.  Most recently, she worked as the Health & Safety Manager for David Atkins Enterprises Productions for the Opening, Closing and Victory Ceremonies for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.  She spent nine years pioneering the health and safety program at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and has consulted for “Safe Stages” (Alberta), and served on the advisory committees for Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), the Ontario Service Safety Alliance (OSSA), as well as the Live Performance Advisory Committee for the Ministry of Labour.

She has completed her Occupational Health & Safety Certificate at Ryerson University and received her professional designation as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP). In 2007, she was selected by Canadian Occupational Safety Magazine as “Canada’s Health & Safety Manager of the Year”.

Prior to her move into the health and safety field, Janet spent 14 years working in Stage Management at theatres across Canada, including over 30 productions at Stratford. She is a graduate of the Technical/Production Theatre Program at the Ryerson Theatre School, and has a BA in psychology from the University of Waterloo.
