Job Description / Duties

The Head of Wardrobe is responsible for managing the technical stage wardrobe and properties elements of Dramatic Arts Department shows and course outcomes, supporting the teaching of costume and small stage properties production by providing training and lab demonstration, supervising students and contractors, and maintaining physical spaces and equipment within the Department. These duties include accountability for financial, production, and administration matters, and classroom support.

As the Head of Wardrobe, you will:

Participate in and supervise construction, maintenance and storage of costumes and small props;

Contribute to Master Schedule of annual DART productions in consultation with Production Manager and production team, including work schedule and purchase and construction schedule;

Work with designers (guest and resident) to adapt designs for theatre and live performance production, providing stock information, updated inventory lists, and advice;

Respond in timely manner to rehearsal notes from Stage Management and recommend solutions to challenging production issues in collaboration with the director, designer, and production team;

Fulfill role of Head of Wardrobe in ordering, purchasing, building, and providing technical expertise for shows and provide regular budget updates and work completion records to Production Manager;

Supervise all contracted and student technical workers and craftspeople in wardrobe and properties tasks, including providing job descriptions and training/guidelines to ensure a clean and safe work environment and a safe working experience;

Provide, procure, or construct and maintain costumes and small props needed for course outcomes or projects;

Maintain basic and safe laboratory teaching spaces and set guidelines and procedures for wardrobe shop use;

Inform acting /practicum instructors of resources available to them, including wardrobe and properties inventories and support and advise faculty and instructors in the preparation of tools and materials kits for course-based teaching;

Provide supplies, wardrobe elements, and small props when requested by instructors and approved by the Production Manager;

Organize and supervise set up and strike for course and project outcomes as required (including stage, backstage, and dressing room space, property loan, storage space);

Calculate time/labor and materials for production budgets, and develop preliminary costing of all shows and provide budgetary estimates, regular budget updates, work completion records, and expenditure reports to the Production Manager;

Participate in and/or manage purchasing, rental, and transportation of costume and other production elements including small props;

Report any accidents/incidents to the Production Manager and Chair;

Oversee and contribute to maintenance of wardrobe equipment, costume and small properties stock, and departmental items in storage and elsewhere;

Manage the accession and deaccession of donations/contributions to the costume collection, the loan of wardrobe and properties elements, and other items within the department, the University, and larger community;

Co-ordinate with Facilities Manager regarding division of responsibilities for cleaning and maintenance of wardrobe construction costume shop and storage and other departmental spaces; and

Attend department meetings and provide advice as requested by the Production Manager and/or the Chair;

Supervise contracted craftspersons, Student Wardrobe Assistants, other students, and artistic personnel working on production, with particular emphasis on stage and shop activities and delegates responsibilities to Wardrobe Assistants as necessary;

Provide information/feedback, when called upon, which assists with the evaluation of the students to the instructor of record; including assessing students’ abilities, supervising, and assigning work in consultation with instructor of record;

All other related duties as required and/or assigned by the Production Manager and/or the Department Chair or a designate.

Irregular and long hours are required to meet production deadlines, including many weekend and evening hours.

Qualifications / Required Skills

What you Need to Succeed…

College Diploma in Technical Theatre, Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, or equivalent combination of education and experience;

Valid Ontario Driver’s License;

A minimum or three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in Production departments of professional theatres;

Demonstrated ability in stage costuming and small properties construction, including purchasing, patterning, sewing, and other construction techniques, and operation of related machinery and equipment;

Demonstrated ability in production planning and safety standards;

Demonstrated ability to interpret design renderings and drawings;

Demonstrated knowledge of basic structural integrity pertaining to materials commonly used in the costuming industry;

Demonstrated knowledge of all areas of theatrical production in diverse theatre organization models;

Ability to manage finances and project material and labour costs;

Demonstrated ability to guide, assess, and provide feedback to learners; and

Commitment to the art of the theatre;

Ability to collaborate to achieve the creative vision of director/designer/team;

Ability to clearly demonstrate and explain tasks to learners and to assess learners’ progress;

Ability to manage limited budgets for productions and maintenance;

Ability to work within a variety of production processes;

Ability to work creatively and collaboratively with limited physical space, challenging schedules, and tight design delivery times;

Ability to creatively provide cost effective and innovative alternatives for stage design;

Ability to understand, contribute to, and help realize an artistic vision.

Preferred or Asset Skills

Membership at CITT, USITT or similar organization;

Experience in an academic environment.

Salary: Job Grade J, Salary Scale $50,980 - $75,356 * This position includes comprehensive benefits coverage including tuition waiver.
