Job Description / Duties

As the assistant to the leader of the technical team, the Assistant Technical Director (ATD) will help to ensure the effective and economically justifiable operation and supervision of the Algonquin College Students’ Association Theatre space. The ATD will support the TD and will act as the representative of the TD when the TD is unavailable. The ATD will be involved with assisting the successful planning, execution, and monitoring of all technical aspects of the theatre. As an ambassador for the Students’ Association, the ATD will be polite, personable, outgoing, and will be able to work as part of a team. Based on the production schedule, the ATD is expected to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as the schedule demands. Additionally, the ATD will assist the TD with capital needs planning, maintenance to the theatre spaces, and help address areas of impending liability

Job Duties
Staffing:
• Supervising, assisting with scheduling, and coordinating the venues technical staff, house crew, and stagehands within set budgets per event.
• Supervise and mentor staff to ensure a professional level of work is produced o General duties as assigned in pursuit of the results of the job.
• Provide technical support as required for all productions:
• Work within venues technical budgets.
• Assist with creating and advancing the venues technical information with all clients in a timely manner.
• Review and negotiate technical rider requirements with clients and artists o Provide a professional production process, commitment to artistic collaboration, quality work, and enthusiasm for a successful production.
• Assist with the creation, development and execution of working drawings using computer aided design software.
• Help interpret and execute production designs based on computer aided design drawings.
• Attend production and other meetings as required. o Participate in technical and dress rehearsals and other performance activities as required.
• Supervise rigging of all production elements, including sets, truss/pipes, lights, sound and special effects.
• Supervise and execute hanging and programing of lighting requirements o Supervise and execute the setup and operation of audio requirements o Source quotes for equipment rentals and purchases whenever required.
• Facilitate, when needed, technical needs/usages for events in other SA areas, such as The Observatory or The Commons Area must be present to supervise “game day” operations when requested o Fill the role as an operator or stage hand for events when required.
• Supervise other tech operators and fill the role as an operator for events held in other SA venues (like The Observatory) o Help with inventory control and management of SA assets o General duties as assigned in pursuit of the results of the job
• Health & Safety:
• Maintain a safe and efficient work place for all personnel.
• Ensure that all safety policies and procedures are in place, all staff are properly supervised, and that the venue meets all required safety codes.
• Implement health and safety policies and procedures for the use of the venue and its associated equipment; assist with training of staff (including freelance staff and student help) in the safe use of tools and equipment and the venue facilities overall
• Maintenance:
• Assist with performing repairs and maintenance of the venue and all production equipment that is owned and operated by the SA.
• Create, manage and help with the venues Green production solutions.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Demonstrated experience supervising staff in the production industry.
• Minimum 5 years of experience with production technology and design.
• Minimum 5 years of experience with technical, production and crew management.
• Experience with advancing touring productions.
• Experience operating personal lifting devices and fork lifts.
• Experience trouble shooting and maintaining production equipment.
• Knowledge of live production safety standards and procedures.
• Experience in lighting control, maintenance, and programing.
• Experience in sound control, maintenance, and programming.
• Experience with fabric fire certifications, testing procedures, and maintenance.
• Ability to interpret and produce working drawings using computer aided design software.
• Ability and willingness to participate in venue staff recruitment and retention initiatives.
• Knowledge on production industries Green initiatives.
• Bilingualism (English/French) will be considered an asset.
