Job Description / Duties

The Technical Operations Manager provides leadership and management for The ACT Art Centre & Theatre’s operations, technical systems and technical personnel including coordinating details necessary for the smooth running of all performances and activities in the facility. This is a full time position with benefits reporting directly to the Executive Director.
Key Responsibilities:
• Recruit and provide orientation and training for Head Technician, other technical support staff and casual labour
• Supervise and schedule the work of the head technician and casual technical support staff
• Provide technical or production services as scheduled for set-up, running and/or strike of productions as per assigned technical role
• Supervise and monitor all activities in areas accessible to renter groups to ensure understanding of procedures, safe and orderly behavior with an emphasis on WCB and WHMIS regulations
• Provide technical support and training to user groups
• Prepare labour, material and equipment rental estimates and final costs for event settlements including timesheets for personnel
• Manage facility operational needs for the Arts Programs and Art Gallery departments, providing technical support when necessary
• Research, prepare and manage department operating and maintenance budget
• Establish operational guidelines for equipment and systems
• Have full operational knowledge, maintain and ensure the reliability and safety of all equipment in use in the facility, including but not limited to lighting, sound, rigging, security and communications
• Continue to maintain or adjust existing policies for health & safety and emergency preparedness for the facility
• Review and implement the annual schedule of building and equipment maintenance
• Maintain annual and long term equipment inventory, including replacement and life span schedules
• Revise and keep up to date a capital replacement plan for major technical equipment in the theatre, including service requirements, setting priorities, cost estimates and related budgeting and the various timelines for replacement
• Liaise with District of Maple Ridge regarding building maintenance, capital and equipment replacement as necessary
• Maintain a library of reference and resource material and contacts within the technical theatre industry and keep abreast of changes within the industry
• Perform any other related duties that may be required by the Executive Director

Qualifications / Required Skills

The successful applicant will have thorough knowledge of production techniques and staging principles and will possess the ability to competently lead our Production Staff to ensure a high standard for all productions. The Technical Operations Manager will be self motivated, possess good organizational and time management skills, plus have excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain a positive attitude in stressful situations. Must be flexible in outlook and approach to the position and be diplomatic in dealing with clients, crews, cast, stage managers and all other staff.
Abilities, Skills and Knowledge:
• This position requires dedication and advanced technical knowledge with demonstrated abilities in planning, organizing and coordinating diverse performing arts and other related activities or events
• This individual must be a graduate of a technical training program; a college diploma or degree in a theatre-related program, with a minimum of 5 years experience or equivalent training and experience
• The candidate must be able to work with diverse groups under stressful situations, at odd hours, and with the ability to work within the budget, policies, regulations and contractual obligations established by Management and the Board of Directors and enforce these policies, regulations and contracts with fairness, impartiality and good judgment
• Due to the nature of the business the individual will work a flexible work week including evenings and weekends.
• Extensive experience in road house operations with a marked interest in workplace safety
• Solid working knowledge of all appropriate technical systems including knowledge of PC, windows based, network environment including:
MS Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint
Knowledge and abilities in Vector Works is an asset
• Ability to manage an operating and capital replacement budget
• Proven ability to effectively manage and provide direction to full time technical staff as well as part time employees, maintaining an atmosphere of trust and encouraging personal and professional growth
• Ability to work closely with professional touring organizations and community groups equally, having a clear understanding of the needs of all clients
• Positive personal contact with our community clients is essential
• Ability to act as a resource for our clients is essential on technical and artistic matters
• Ability to successfully operate in a fast paced flexible environment

Required Licenses, Certificates and Registrations:
• BC Drivers License
• Occupational First Aid Level 1 - WCB
• LE, FE or LPEC qualification – BC Electrical Safety Branch
