Job Description / Duties

PTE is a fast-paced organization offering a great working environment. The Head of Wardrobe will be self-motivated with the ability to work independently while contributing to a strong team environment and possess good organizational and time management skills. The successful applicant will also have excellent communication skills.

The Head of Wardrobe will work under the supervision of the Production Manager.

Specific skills will include, but not be limited to:
1) Construction or procurement of all costumes (rehearsal and final) and costume props for all five mainstage and one Theatre for Young Audiences mainstage/touring production. Depending on the size of the show, a casual buyer is hired, that is normally shared with the Props Dept. On exceptionally large projects, casual builder(s) is/are hired.
2) Coordinate purchases of related materials and accessories.
3) Purchase costume pieces, related materials and accessories as needed.
4) Make alterations to purchased or borrowed costumes to fit performers and restore borrowed items to original measurements as required at the conclusion of a production.
5) Coordinate hair and make-up of performers as required by production.
6) Supervise and lead wardrobe production and maintenance personnel.
7) Cost estimates for the Wardrobe Dept. as preliminary and final designs arrive.
8) Control show and department budgets and report as required.
9) Work closely with Designers, Stage Managers and Dressers.
10) Attend production meetings, arrange for and attend fittings and supervise dress parade.
11) Efficiently utilize costume stock and supervise its inventory and maintenance as well as rentals.
12) Maintenance of costumes during the run of all productions as required.
13) Obtain, resolve and follow up on notes in a timely fashion ensuring a high production value.
14) Ensure proper use and maintenance of facilities, tools and equipment.
15) Organize and co-ordinate hand-over to show running crew (ASM, dressers, wigs)
16) Ensure proper show documentation as required.
17) Assistance to the PTE School, other production, and administrative departments as necessary.
18) Assistance to other theatres as time permits.
19) Make recommendations regarding improvements and capital purchases.
20) Assist with occupational safety and health of workers

Additional Information

This position is governed by a collective agreement between PTE and IATSE Local 63.

Start date is September 6, 2011 with a tentative mid April end date.

Founded in 1972, Prairie Theatre Exchange (located in downtown Winnipeg’s Portage Place Mall) produces a five-play mainstage season at its 323-seat thrust theatre between Sept – May each year.
