Deck heights before railing/guardrail
by Alex House, April 9, 2018
Hello All,

A question that has come up often for me is when is a handrail required. Particularly for production shows where the set is being designed/built. I usually maintain the building code rule of approx 3' but as we all know in theatre there is "artistic license". Wondering if anyone has documentation as to regs or equity allowances for me to have backup?

I personally dont see why we cant incorporate something into the set designs to keep it safe for all the cast and it feels like another one of those things that has been ingrained "Oh its okay because its theatre"

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Every region has it's "legal" limit in the OHS regs w the Province; in AB it's 10 ft/ 3m on temp structures. Before the Directors start celebrating we also have to perform due diligence on the activities AND the hazards above, below and which Cha-Cha are we doing at the time.

Sorry folks, it's not formulaic it's the same old taking care with more paperwork.

Frankly, I'm more afraid on the steps in the new arenas.
