Job Description / Duties

To provide technical support to the artists, clients and community users of the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. The Technician will have well-rounded experience in all technical areas of theatre production in order to meet the requirements of the diverse users of our facility. The Theatre Technician reports to the Stage Manager.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• diploma related to technical theatre from an accredited institution or a minimum of three years of professional related experience.
• minimum of two years professional experience working in a wide range of related production areas including but not limited to sound, lighting and rigging.

Additional Information

Key Knowledge, Technical Skills and Abilities
• ability to work with live sound such as digital live mixing consoles and related audio equipment
• demonstrated ability to work and assist a wide range of performance types including live music, theatre, dance, choirs, variety shows, presentations, etc.
• must be available to work daytime, evenings and weekends
• ability to work at heights and climb ladders
• capable of safely lifting 50 pounds to head height.
• fall arrest, aerial lift training, standard First Aid, WHMIS training
• competent working with wood working tools (mitre saw, table saw, jig saw, circular saw etc.)
• competent in audio equipment maintenance (including soldering, basic rewiring etc.)
• strong communication skills, both written and verbal
• excellent customer service skills
• ability to work independently
• working knowledge of Microsoft Office
• class 5 driver’s license

Principle Duties & Responsibilities
• works as part of an event crew
• operates live audio console and related audio equipment for a variety of events including mixing concerts, monitors, sound cue playback for theatre and dance events etc.
• operates ETC EOS (or similar) lighting console
• coordinates equipment needs with guest technicians and artists
• provides on-the-day training, guidance and support to user groups, community members and students using the theatre
• provides orientation on required equipment to volunteers and user groups
• assists with properly cleaning the stage and rehearsal areas of the building and performs basic equipment maintenance
• assists the Stage Manager with occupational health and safety concerns for all co-workers, volunteers, students and audience members
• assists with evacuation procedures in the event of a fire alarm or other emergency. This includes making announcements in the house for the audience and through the backstage areas for the performers and crew
• works on regular building maintenance, including assisting with snow removal when needed
• will complete a full walk through of the facility at the end of every performance day to ensure all exterior doors are locked and secure and alarms are set
• assists in set up of tables, chairs and other banquet equipment for events in the WMCA as needed
• completes any required reports and documentation and obtains necessary signatures from clients
• offers suggestions and solutions to clients and is clear on the cost of extra items requested for technical needs, after reviewing with Stage Manager

Theatre Production
The Theatre Technician assists in all areas of theatre production support including, but not limited to:
• technical riders – assist Stage Manager in planning, evaluating and proposing solutions
• lighting – hang, focus and lighting board operations and maintenance
• sound – sound setups, basic mixing, band set ups, sound checks
• flies – rigging and operation of manual fly system
• carpentry – basic stage carpentry
• video – set up and operations of projection systems
• set up, strike and theatre reset as required by each event

General Duties
• attends to all inquiries through in-person, telephone, and written communication
• complies with all relevant legislations, regulations, bylaws, agreements, policies and procedures
• follows regulations, acts and policies of Occupational Health & Safety
• performs other related duties as assigned

Salary: $17.00 to $19.00 per hour (depending on experience) plus benefits
