The Theatre Technician provides support and coordination of the logistics for the operation of the 1029 seat McIntyre Performing Arts Centre. The incumbent performs a variety of responsibilities related to the theatres lighting, sound and rigging equipment.

The facility is frequently used by both internal departments and the local community as a professional theatre venue. Bookings range from lectures and convocations to dance recitals and music concerts.

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:

Technical Duties:

Understanding objectives and delivery styles of the various artists and clients and matching them with the capabilities of various technologies and software available.
Determining and implementing alternatives to address production needs.
Consulting with clients with regard to technical specifications and applications and making recommendations.
Set up lighting systems and programming according to the event requirements.
Maintain daily paperwork required to operate booking.
Work with client to ensure sound requirements are met.
Provide troubleshooting support for system failures.
Set up stage equipment and changeovers.
Follow best practices and ensure safety of staff, venue and equipment at all times.
Perform equipment maintenance to ensure equipment stays in a state of good repair.

Communication & Logistics:

Oversee activities pertaining to the provision of technical support and effective utilization of Theatre facilities. This involves:
Communicating on a regular basis with clients and other members of the college community including faculty, staff, and administration in order to identify scheduled activities and assess equipment.
Designing lighting, audio, staging requirements as per client’s instructions.
Maintaining records and preparing invoices where applicable.
Coordinating priorities in consideration of scheduled events for integrating installation, maintenance and repair of Theatre facilities and equipment, technical personnel and external contractors.
Providing technical advice to students.
Monitoring installed systems by external contractors, vendors and/or College technical personnel.
Repairing and resolving problems with actual breakdowns and perceived equipment faults as identified by technical staff and clients.
Ensure safety and security of staff, clients, audience and facilities.

Qualifications / Required Skills

The successful applicant must have:

A minimum of 2 year diploma in related field; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Minimum of two (2) years​of industry or equivalent experience.
Minimum of 2 years of industry or equivalent experience working in a similar role or capacity for a theatre or performing arts centre.
Previous experience with Digico SD9 Audio Console and ETC Ion Lighting Console.
Strong customer service skills with demonstrated genuine client focused service delivery.
Excellent communication skills.
A high level of attention to detail.
Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
