Job Description / Duties

The Stage Manager and Production Assistant serves visiting and resident artists, and program participants, working primarily in performing arts-based disciplines. Its primary function is to provide the expertise required for the smooth and efficient presentation of concerts and other public events, thus contributing to the artistic success of the programs and other public presentations. The position also serves conference guests and other external clients, as required.

Reporting to the Managing Director, Production, below are some key responsibilities:
• Assist in the preparation and distribution of rehearsal schedules, including lighting, sound and staging requirements in conjunction with the other Production staff.
• Assists Production Coordinators to ensure that all equipment is available and in top working order.
• Set up and operate a basic public address system and recording system, as required.
• Liaise with performers and faculty to determine their performance needs and provide staging.
• Liaise with artistic personnel and with Box Office to determine house set-up needs for each concert.
• Ensure efficient running of rehearsals.
• Prior to performance, ensure that performers are present and ready, that necessary equipment and staging requirements are ready, that house is prepared to open and that lighting and audio cues have been checked.
• During the concert, ensure efficient running of program and call any necessary lighting and audio cues. Be prepared to manage all aspects of concert operation as required (including emergency procedures, etc).
• After a performance, assist in clearing the stage of all equipment and prepare the show report, indicating audience numbers and reporting on any incidents of note.
• When appropriate, assist performers with their professional development, as regards professional performance practice.
• Ensure studios are in working order, including all chairs, stands, humidifiers and furniture in music studio spaces.
• In conjunction with other Production staff, monitor the condition of Production facilities and equipment, including the performance venues and recommend both capital acquisition and maintenance requirements for those areas.
• At the beginning and end of each major program, project or conference, Restore studios to their “neutral” set-up, and ensure that the inventory of chairs, music stands, studio furniture, and other equipment is in working order.
• As required, provide production assistance and stage management for off-campus performances.
• As directed, undertake the construction, repair, or general maintenance of production/facility equipment (as listed above).

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Completion of secondary school with a keen interest in performing arts. A background in music is an asset
• Operational knowledge of theatre lighting, sound, and audio-visual equipment
• Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel
• Knowledge of File Maker Pro and Farmer’s Wife software is an asset
• Excellent communication and team work skills in order to interact with technical staff (audio, production, technicians), artistic staff, faculty and participants
• Flexibility, and the ability to multi-task and to make prompt decisions
• Valid driver’s license
• Tact in dealing with directors, faculty and participant performers working under pressure
• The ability to remain calm under stress and meet strict deadlines
• Excellent organizational and administrative skills,
• Knowledge of Banff Centre health and safety procedures

Special Requirements
From time-to-time, this position will be required to work irregular hours and weekends.

Employment Terms & Benefits

This is a temporary position ending on December 24, 2021

This position pays between $18.44 and $21.21 per hour, depending on experience, working 40 hours per week. In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500 hour probation period.
