Job Description / Duties

Position Overview

The Division of Drama in the School of Creative and Performing Arts in the Faculty of Arts is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Properties Master. The Properties Master reports to the Academic Production Manager. This position works variable hours when necessary.
The Properties Master is a fully proficient technical practitioner with in-­depth knowledge of theory, systems, technologies and processes of Properties design and construction. This position requires discretionary decision-­making based on sound judgement within prescribed policies, and a high level of independence and initiative within the position responsibilities. The position juggles multiple simultaneous deadlines and shifting priorities throughout the academic year; work is driven by constant deadlines. The work requires possible exposure to dangerous materials and/or situations. There is a moderate to high level of physical demands. The work requires the Properties Master to be off campus for the purposes of materials acquisition and research. Training and monitoring of part-­time and student staff on projects and all workshop equipment is required. Ongoing budget and receipt tracking along with credit card reconciliation are expected.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Examine, interpret, cost, and execute Properties designs
  • Act as a technical and design resource for students, faculty, staff and third-­party renters regarding Properties elements required for their projects
  • Train and mentor student Production Assistants in Properties-­related responsibilities including planning, costing, altering and construction techniques
  • Supervise students throughout the rehearsal and production process with an eye to efficient and safe use of equipment
  • Act as laboratory supervisor for technical theatre courses relating to Properties and other technical areas. This function requires the ability to demonstrate, instruct, and train students at all levels of competence, whether graduate or undergraduate, as well as assisting staff and faculty in the use of all facility systems and equipment
  • Work independently and manage projects effectively, on time, on budget and aligned with the SCPA’s overall objectives
  • Maintain technical systems, equipment and personal protective equipment in the Properties workshop so that they are fully functional and available to users
  • Ensure the safe and proper use of equipment and materials in the Properties Workshop and other venues following the University’s Occupational Health and Safety policies and guidelines
  • Ensure that spaces are clean, organized and regularly maintained
  • Create and maintain a safe and secure working environment
  • Develop and maintain good working relations within the Drama Division, the SCPA, other units within the University as well as with the general public where those relationships involve production and technical matters

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • BA or BFA in Drama or a Technical Theatre diploma in a related field and/or related work experience
  • A demonstrated working knowledge of Properties and a minimum of five years’ experience in Properties costing, planning build schedules, buying materials, organizing stock and leading Properties personnel
  • Supervising lab instruction in the Properties Workshop and for other technical theatre courses to graduate and undergraduate students
  • A working knowledge of carpentry, upholstery, sewing and soft goods fabrication, scenic sculpture, molding and casting, thermoplastics, plastic resins, mask construction, furniture finishing, colour theory and mixing, scenic painting and paint techniques
  • Knowledge of the use of shop tools
  • Knowledge of Vectorworks, CADD, and basic office computer applications (ex. Word and Excel)
  • A proven ability to lead a team and work effectively on a team
  • A demonstrated knowledge of project costing, planning, and execution
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A valid Driver’s License
  • Experience working with students in a post-­secondary setting is an asset
  • First Aid training is an asset
  • WHIMS training is an asset
