Job Description / Duties

The vibrant Department of Arts, Culture and Media (ACM) at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) brings together a wealth of artistic and academic activity under one umbrella. Its dynamic community of faculty and staff attracts students interested in building their knowledge, working across boundaries, and engaging with creative practices in arts, media and journalism. Working alongside faculty, a team of dedicated staff members provides administrative services advancing the academic mission of programs across the Department.

Reporting to the Departmental Chair of Arts, Culture and Media (ACM), the Manager, Technical Operations is responsible for planning and managing ACM's technical operations as well as supporting an environment of seamless teaching, training and learning. The Manager collaborates with the faculty and technical staff to identify areas for improvement, implement best practices, and optimize use of technical resources while complying with health and safety regulations and University policies and procedures.

The incumbent works with a high degree of autonomy to oversee the day-to-day operations of ACM's laboratories and specialized teaching spaces to ensure that they are in good order and that continuous improvements are made to enhance student learning. Exercising a high degree of creativity, judgment and initiative, the Manager works with the ACM Chair and consults with faculty to develop policies and procedures to enhance workflows and creates strategies and solutions to support growth and new initiatives. They will also develop strategic plans to manage ACM's software and equipment acquisitions, maintenance and disposals and will administer the Department's equipment inventory.

The Manager monitors the implementation of space renovations and special projects, acting as the main contact with Facilities and Services and other service providers to ensure that requirements, budgets and deadlines are met and any issues arising are addressed in a timely and satisfactory manner. The Manager is responsible for human resources and labour relations of technical staff. In compliance with the applicable collective agreements, the incumbent’s management functions include organizational design, assignment of work, hiring, performance management, professional development, dispute resolution, and business continuity planning for work disruptions or stoppages.

Qualifications / Required Skills

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Fine Arts, Visual/Media Studies, Music or Theatre or in other related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience in equipment and/or facilities management, and demonstrated experience with direct management of staff/team required, preferably in an academic environment or institutional setting. Familiarity with visual, media, music and sound, fabrication and digital equipment, and the relevant processes, materials and methodologies involved is highly preferred. Proven experience in thinking strategically and directing resolution of technical problems using innovative approaches. Demonstrated experience on budget planning and in developing and implementing policies and procedures. Strong working knowledge of human resources and environmental health and safety policies and procedures such as collective agreement administration and OHSA, and WHMIS, respectively. Applicants are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.

SKILLS: Must have excellent skills in organization and project management, decision-making, leadership and conflict resolution, software (e.g. Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, or other appropriate document or project management software), and oral and written communication.

OTHER: Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence others to gain consensus. Ability to inspire and foster innovation, collaboration, transparency and teamwork. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Qualification as a First Aid responder is an asset (First Aid training will be provided). Ability to lead and learn continually “on-the-job” under pressure on own initiative and without prior or with minimal training or instructions. Ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, tact and diplomacy.
