Job Description / Duties

The Tarragon Theatre is seeking a Head Carpenter, this is a full-time seasonal position. The Head Carpenter will oversee all construction for the 2018/2019 season. This position requires a self-motivated individual to exercise sound judgment, to communicate with other departments, and to supervise casual technicians as required on an individual production basis. The position requires an understanding of technical theatre, managing relationships and balancing responsibilities and time in a manner that is best for the company.

• Responsible for the construction of sets and furniture for all Mainspace and Extraspace productions
• Attend design meetings as necessary
• Attend weekly production meetings and weekly production department meetings
• Attend any meetings or rehearsals where actors interact with specific scenic elements
• As instructed by the Technical Director, provide suitable and reasonable ‘mock-ups’ of essential scenic elements for use in the rehearsal hall
• Conduct a risk assessment for all scenic elements at various phases of construction, installation and final use by actors
• Supervise casual crews in the carpentry shop and onstage during load-in
• Provide assistance or consultation for Head of Props on any props/furniture requiring use of carpentry shop
• Participate in and/or lead load-ins, set-ups, strikes, technical and dress rehearsals, photo/media calls, and previews as deemed necessary by the Production Manager and Technical Director
• Attend all Tarragon Opening Night parties
• Act as Health & Safety representative for the Production Department

• As deemed necessary by the Production Manager, provide carpentry support to non-production related projects
• Maintain carpentry shop tools, equipment and materials stock; order supplies as necessary
• Maintain a clean, safe and efficient working environment and an organized and well-functioning materials storage area

• Act as a carpentry resource for the Workspace Technician
• Work in conjunction with Tarragon Staff to ensure that all Tarragon events have the necessary carpentry support
• Participate in an annual performance review conducted by the Production Manager and Technical Director
• Adhere to Tarragon’s Health & Safety policies and company policies

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Completion of post-secondary theatre production/technical theatre program
• MUST have the ability to read and comprehend technical drawings, construction drawings and schematics
• Minimum 3 years of experience as a carpenter in a theatrical setting
• Ability to generate accurate construction drawings in AutoCAD as required
• Knowledge and understanding of theatrical construction methods and best practices
• Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety legislation
• Ability to think critically and problem solve
• Ability to take an initiative
• Ability to lead casual crew
• Welding and metal work experience is an asset
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as required (occasional)
• Have a flexible and adaptable personality
• Possess a strong work ethic and attention to detail
