The City of Vancouver has a challenging and rewarding career opportunity for a regular full-time Head Sound Technician within the Civic Theatres Division, Cultural Services in the Community Services Group.
This is highly specialized work of a technical nature; responsibilities include the installation, maintenance and operation of all types of equipment, both analog and digital, commonly used for audio recording and reinforcement in large and medium sized theatres for all types of events.
Implementation of stage sound designs, translating a wide variety of information (from detailed plans to vague verbal descriptions) into fully realized stage sound for opera, ballets, musicals, and a wide variety of concerts and assembly events in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the Vancouver Playhouse and Orpheum as well as in the Annex. This position also assists the Technical Director in planning future stage related operations, purchases and upgrades. The major licensees in the VCT include: Vancouver Symphony, Vancouver Chamber Choir, Vancouver Opera, Ballet BC, The Broadway Across Canada series, Live Nation Canada, Paul Mercs Concerts. Timbre Productions, Dancehouse. Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company, Vancouver Recital Society, Friends of Chamber Music. Other programming includes visiting/touring dance presentations, corporate meetings, graduations and various community concerts and events. An employee in this position normally works a varied schedule, including work during nights and weekends.
The successful candidate will have broad experience and/or education (equivalent to 2 years full-time) in stage technical production giving them familiarity with the requirements and practices of theatrical production and presentation. They will have been employed for a minimum of the equivalent of five years in stage sound and a minimum of 2 years in an equivalent position (Head Sound) in a comparable facility, ideally as part of a multi-theatre complex. Touring experience is desirable. Education: completion of grade 12 supplemented with technical courses related to the work, completion of a stage rigging course and a FE electrical certificate or better is desirable. Completion of a recognized trades apprenticeship where applicable. First Aid - Level 1 is desirable. This position is open to both female and male candidates.
