Job Description / Duties

Who are we looking for?

The 2nd Stage Carpenter is a permanent part-time role and a key part of our production team. The 2nd Stage Carpenter will work under the supervision of the Pre-Production Manager during pre-production and the Technical Directors for Arts Club venues on installs and have the option to be part of the running crew when required. This is a unionized position in I.A.T.S.E. 118. Historically we produce around 18-20 productions a year.

We are looking for a creative, outgoing, and enthusiastic person who has a passion for theatre. The successful applicant will have a broad knowledge in theatrical procedures, scenic construction, problem solving, tools and theatre products. The 2nd Stage Carpenter will be self-motivated, have excellent communication skills, and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations. They must be flexible in outlook and approach to the position and be diplomatic in dealing with crews, cast, stage managers and all other staff.

What is the job?

• The primary job is to lead crews in the set installation and strike for all ACTC productions.
• Work directly with the Production Management Team, Scenic Carpenters, and Head Stage Carpenters to create clear and detailed plans for set install, run, and strike.
• Set construction in the scene shop as required.
• Assist with set fit up and tear down in the production shop.
• Work directly with the install team to fit up the set according to the install plan and production schedule.
• Supervise and assist with fit up and strike in all three Arts Club venues and attend to scenic notes at the venues.
• Supervise and assist with truck loading/ unloading.
• Advise and assist with on-going stage & scenery maintenance.

Qualifications / Required Skills

What are the required skills and qualifications?

• Broad knowledge in theatrical procedures, scenic construction, problem solving, tools and theatre products.
• Proficient knowledge of counter weighted fly systems and the set-up, rigging and strike of scenery.
• Thorough knowledge of all aspects of scenic construction.
• Experience with operation and maintenance of motorized stage equipment and scenery
• Ability to read and understand designer blueprints (e.g. floor plans, elevations
• Practical experience with MS Office Suite.
• A knack for troubleshooting and solving technical problems in theatre.
• Proven ability to supervise, train, and support assigned union staff.
• Ability to effectively pack & load trucks.
• Take direction and work under time constraints with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrated strong organization and problem-solving skills.


What are the Mandatory requirements?

• At least 2 years’ experience as a stage technician
• Able to work at heights / climb ladders
• Able to repeatedly lift, push or maneuver heavy loads, either alone or with assistance from others
• Valid Driver’s License, able to drive a 5-ton truck
• Demonstrated experience of working and rigging in a ‘fly house’


Where will preference be given?
• Preference will be given to candidates who are members of IATSE local 118
• Preference will be given to those with leadership experience in a union environment

• OFA Level 1 certificate
• Knowledge of theatrical stage lighting including hang, focus, and maintenance is an asset

Additional Information

What are the conditions and remuneration?

• Work is based on a permanent part-time schedule
• During Scenic Installations and Tech weeks there will be work scheduled in excess of 40 hours per week
• Overtime hours worked can be banked and paid out at the employees discretion
• Hourly rate is set by IATSE Collective Agreement (Sept 21-22: $28.37/hr)
• Option to be included in IATSE RRSP Matching Program
• Vacation days and PTO for illness and emergency as defined by the ACTC/IATSE CBA
• Comprehensive Benefits Package through IATSE Local 118
• Offices are located in Vancouver, BC on Granville Island and at the BMO Theatre Centre in Olympic Village

Salary: $28.37/hr
