IATSE Local 709, with the generous support of the Canada Performing Arts Workers Resilience Fund (CPAWRF), is excited to offer a “Black Hair Education” course.

About the course:
This course is being instructed by Mykael Jackman, a leader in the hair industry for 30 years. He is a Red Seal hairstylist/Barber Certified Teacher with cross-culture experience in various areas of the hair industry, including stylist awards, photo shoots, platform artistry, salon ownership, on set hairstylist, module facilitator for IATSE 873, workshop facilitator, chair Instructor for Durham Hairstylist Academy and mentor and trainer for Skills Ontario Competition participants. Mykael, together with his wife Ursulla and 3 of his 5 children, Star, Israel and Isaiah continue to be passionate and display leadership as hair industry professionals.
This course will help to demystify some of the art in manipulating textured hair for a variety of styling purposes. It is about building knowledge and skills in the areas of product use, braiding techniques and silk-press styling as well as many additional tips and tricks. The students will learn how to identify various curl patterns, which products to utilize, how to perform a number of hair braiding extension techniques, how to utilize the hot-comb and flat iron to achieve the popular silk press results/dread loc formation skills and black hair techniques for styling.
This course is open to all performing arts workers and is being offered at no cost as part of the trainings the IATSE is providing through the Canada Performing Arts Workers Resilience Fund.
