The Venue Technician will work in all three spaces. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Help organize and execute lighting, audio and staging requirements of both presentations and rentals of The Cultch including preparing supplementary gear rental lists, colour and accessories needed for each show or event in advance
Collaborate with the Technical Director and/or Production Manager prior to events
Act as crew chief for load ins, load outs and/or restore shifts, ensuring safe working practices are being upheld, and that breaks and schedules remain on track
Hang, focus, program lights in accordance with each Production’s Designer or Director’s vision
Act as Show Head Electrician or Venue Technician on show runs as required
Maintain storage areas, lighting gear and common theatre spaces for all 3 venues
Organize and inventory theatre(s) gear and accessories regularly
Assist in other Cultch production departments with advice and technical aid when requested
Comply with BC safe working practice and methodology; instruction of other employees in proper work procedures and the use of safety equipment while working at height, either on ladders, or in personnel lifts
Ongoing training and upgrading as required
Supervision shall include checking that all work is done in a manner that ensures the safety of the Staff, Performers and Patrons of The Cultch. All of the above duties and responsibilities are to be conducted in a cost effective manner, ensuring that productions stay on schedule and alerting the Production Manager of any cost overruns in a timely manner.
A post-secondary diploma in production and/or a minimum 5 years professional experience in technical theatre
High proficiency in operating of ETC Ion console and 2-4 years programming lighting for theatre as well as live music events
Thorough understanding and working knowledge of DMX control, including but not limited to LEDs, scrollers, I-Cues, Gobo Rotators, moving fixtures and other effects and accessories
Experience with IT networks for entertainment, routers, IP addressing, etc.
Experience reading lighting plots and associated paperwork
Experience in supervision of technical personnel
Experience with live audio and digital consoles, experience operating and programming QLab
Working knowledge of Q-Lab, basic Audio and AudioVideo and Projection Systems
Physically fit in order to do multiple trips up and down stairs, ladders and comfortable working at heights
Other Required Skills:
The ability to work to schedule and meet deadlines and work well under pressure
Working knowledge of theatre stage carpentry
Experience in the safe operation and maintenance of single and double purchase fly systems
Ability to handle unexpected situations and work in a team environment including willingness to welcome and guide clients and crew through what our theatre has to offer whether they are designers, directors, artists or event organizers.
Computer skills including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Vectorworks an asset
Valid BC driver’s license
Level 1 Occupational First Aid certificate is an asset
Flexible schedule; ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays
Good communication skills and a love of performing arts
Excellent interpersonal skills are essential for working with a diverse group of renters, producers, directors, artists, other staff and IATSE crew.
Basic technical skill and knowledge are required in all areas outside of lighting including, rigging (certification an asset), audio systems, backline equipment, video equipment, installation of staging systems, and carpentry. Also, experience with shop and stage tool safety, pyrotechnics (and firearms certification) is an asset. Must be prepared to deal calmly and effectively with public emergency situations and audience safety issues.
The Venue Technician will know (or be required to learn) current rules of WCB as well as the current IATSE Local 118 collective bargaining agreement. The Venue Technician will be expected to keep up to date with changes as required by law and the job description. The Venue Technician reports to The Cultch Technical Director and Production Manager.
Salary: $22.85 per hour plus benefits less Union dues
